Tessa Sipe and Lilli Popovich touched down upon the field like cyclones,
blowing away the competition. Sipe won the 300 hurdles, long jump and
pole vault. Popovich took the 100 hurdles, shot and the discus. Isaiah
Ragland rained down thunder on the 100 and 300 hurdles, rounding up the
multi-event winners. Hannah Herd, Kenzie Stovall and Jessica Bozell
claimed wins in the 1600, high jump and triple jump respectively.
Some of the Centurions’ best performers
then took the storm to the Eastern Relays on Friday and Saturday hosted
at the University of Louisville. The two-day event boasted 2,600 athletes
from eight states and 101 National Elite standard performances, most notably,
the fastest high school mile U.S. competition. Having a significant
number of CAL athletes qualify shows the great climate of the current
Centurion Track program.
Callie Donaldson quenched the thirst for the steeplechase competition
with a 16th place performance of 8:40.93. Austin Shaper
flowed like a river to 21st (7:39.57) and 34th place (8:06.74) finishes
respectively.
Conner Cloyd broke his own
school record, breezing into 11th
with a time of 1:59.25 in the 800. This placed him sixth among Kentucky
runners. Hannah Herd represented CAL with a 5:31.01 mile--
that’s fast, folks! Herd followed that up, finishing 24th in the 800 with a
career best 2:28.56. Popovich took 20th in the discus with 87’2” and
24th in the shot with 30’1/2”. Sipe took 10th in the long jump, tying the
top Kentucky mark of 8’6” and then placed 37th in the 300 hurdles with
53.75.
Placing eighth in a competition this huge requires the perfect storm
of talent, determination and character. Maya Wright, Eva Bohne’,
Taylor Ross and Herd placed 8th in the 800 sprint relay with Adam
