UNOFFICIAL GUIDE Social Life CHAPTER 13 MODULE LIFE You’ve finally reached medical school. So, now it’s time for real professional interactions with colleagues sharing the same desires and needs as you, all endeavoring to become future physicians. …You would think this is what the social climate would be here. However, as you get into the routine you suddenly realize that the day-to-day schedule of med school is somewhat similar to high school. You go to classes that each end in 10 minute breaks, eerily like a passing period. You also have lockers, which now hold scrubs and dissecting tools instead of a Literature book. There are even three Student Council Representatives– following me? There are 9 mods and every module functions as a sort of “homeroom” for a group of 20 students or less. You and your mod-mates will each have a desk where you can store books and personal belongings as well as pictures or whatever else you like to have around. The modules all have a microwave, sink and a fridge along with various items such as coffeepots contributed by individuals for community use. The module is also a classroom where you will meet for PCM and other small-group activities. Most importantly, these people with whom you share desk space become more than just classmates, they become your “mod” – your friends, your study buddies, your dissecting partners, and when you need it most, your shoulder to lean on. You will cram for tests together, stumble thru your first patient interview together and you will make up competitive games using only a tennis ball and a shelf or the rolling chairs and strong men. Ultimately, your mod-mates are essential to your entire medical school experience. Make a point to get to know them all – each has something worthwhile to share with you and they’ll soon become a permanent fixture in your medical school education! SOCIAL CALENDARS & INTRAMURALS The social life during your first year of medical school will be whatever you make it to be. For those who desire an active social calendar, many opportunities will be available throughout the year. Post-test block parties will be a time for your class to get together in order to enjoy a weekend with nothing to do and to act like miscreants. This weekend often works as a panacea after a long week of testing. Many test block parties are a joint first and second year effort. Last year’s parties included a Toga party, Halloween party, White trash bash, and several themeless affairs. Also, we enjoyed an end-of-the-year party entitled Revelry. The spring semester will include Aesculapian, or the College of Medicine Awards Banquet. It is here where you will honor one member of your class and one instructor with outstanding achievement awards (called the Podarlirian and Aesculapian, respectively). This is another opportunity to put on your suit or dress and impress that guy or girl you’ve had your eye on all year. You will elect social chairs (ours known as the “social highchair”) by the first 37
UNOFFICIAL GUIDE week of school that will be in charge of running all social activities for your class throughout the year. Intramurals are also a large part of the social life at OUHSC. You will elect an IM chair who will be in charge of coordinating the intramural activities for your class. The basketball and flag football tournaments serve as perfect grounds to ignite rivalries between the different colleges on campus as well as the different classes within the medical school. BAR TOURS No matter what your social calendar may include, there is one tradition, which you can count on every Thursday night… Bar Tour. The location changes every week but the schedule is guaranteed to include some of the classiest and some of the shadiest places in the city. In addition to the local patrons, the crowd is primarily MS1s and MS2s however there are occasionally MS3s or MS4s in attendance. No matter who you are or what type of establishment you prefer, everyone needs some time away from school. Especially when the books are piling up and the stress level is ring, the best thing you can do for your body and your sanity is take a break and have some fun with friends. Maybe you enjoy the taste of an adult beverage or maybe you just need to leave your books and re-discover your social life. No matter what the circumstance, Bar Tour is a great study break. How you choose to spend your time at Bar Tour is entirely up to you. You can hang out, you can play pool (or whatever game is available), you can stop by for just one before heading home or back to studying, or you can drink until the bar closes. The best thing about Bar Tour is this… it gives everyone a chance to get to know one another as people, as friends, away from school and it never fails to be a great time… unless you’re being “that guy” and talking about medical school non stop during bar tour.
