High-end system to facilitate the country’s flood control works<br />

<strong>The</strong> jo<strong>in</strong>t research project "Multiobjective<br />
decision mak<strong>in</strong>g and ra<strong>in</strong>fall-runoff<br />
prediction theories for complex flood<br />
control system for reservoirs" conducted<br />
by <strong>PolyU</strong>, Dalian <strong>University</strong> of Technology<br />
and Dalian Naval Academy of the PLA,<br />
is a flood control software management<br />
system. It has a forecast<strong>in</strong>g accuracy<br />
of over 90%, provid<strong>in</strong>g an effective<br />
method to dispatch <strong>in</strong> the actual flood<strong>in</strong>g<br />
environment. <strong>The</strong> system has been<br />
successfully applied to the flood control<br />
system centred around the Three Gorges<br />
Reservoir for flood<strong>in</strong>g system plann<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
and the Liao River, Hun River and Tai<br />
River for real time operation of reservoirs,<br />
allow<strong>in</strong>g decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g authorities <strong>in</strong><br />
dispatch<strong>in</strong>g more effective flood control,<br />
as well as to plan for feasibility study of<br />
hydroelectric generation. <strong>The</strong> system has<br />
now been <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> over 100 medium<br />
to large reservoirs <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>ese ma<strong>in</strong>land. Dr.<br />
Chau Kwok-w<strong>in</strong>g of the<br />
Department of Civil and<br />
Structural Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, who<br />
is the person-<strong>in</strong>-charge of the<br />
project, has been honoured<br />
with the second-class award<br />
of the prestigious State<br />
Natural Science Awards<br />
(SNSA) <strong>in</strong> 2009.<br />
