Three decades of Chinese network
During the historical visit, Polytechnic
Director Keith Legg exchanges a

In 1978, the Hong Kong Polytechnic is the first tertiary institute of Hong Kong invited to visit a
renowned university in China.
The 21st Century has been often
referred the century for Asia: it
is a time when the economic growth
in China tops the world, and China
will undoubtedly take an important
position in the international arena.
Ever since China became member
of the World Trade Organization,
its acceleration in opening up and
economic development have been
evident – the country is now the
world’s third largest economy. Hong
Kong is also becoming more and more
integrated into the Chinese economy,
and its scope of collaboration with the
mainland has become more and more
diversified.
Since Hong Kong returned to the
sovereignty of China, PolyU has
maintained its distinctive position as
a local university without forgetting
its role as a member of the national
tertiary education sector. In fact,
PolyU has cooperated seamlessly
with many tertiary institutions of the
mainland, thanks to the University’s
early and deepened involvement with
Chinese institutes and organizations
through high level connection when
the State implemented its Open Door
policy 30 years ago.
