A collective term for BOVINE LIVESTOCK. DAIRY CATTLE are<br />

kept for milk producti<strong>on</strong> and BEEF CATLE are reared for meat.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>cerning CATTLE.<br />

A female bovine animal. For CATTLE, the female is usually<br />

termed COW <strong>on</strong> bearing her sec<strong>on</strong>d CALF.<br />

Cows kept for producing milk or for rearing CALVES for a dairy<br />

herd.<br />

Young stock <strong>on</strong> a dairy farm not yet in milk but growing to<br />

become DAIRY COWS.<br />

The <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a cow. Males are termed BULL CALVES and<br />

females HEIFER CALVES.<br />

A female cow that has not yet born two CALVES. A pregnant<br />

heifer is termed an IN-CALF HEIFER. Sometimes used for<br />

female CATTLE before giving birth to a CALF.<br />

Cow kept for mainly for rearing CALVES for beef producti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

A cow that is allowed to rear its own CALF before being used<br />

for beef producti<strong>on</strong> rather than for milk producti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

SUCKLER COW<br />

CATTLE kept at a steady rate <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> growth prior to later fattening<br />

for slaughter.<br />

A castrated BULL.<br />

BULLOCK<br />

An uncastrated adult BOVINE animal.<br />

Cattle kept for the producti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> beef. Usually slaughtered at<br />

450-550 kg live weight at an age <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 13-16 m<strong>on</strong>ths for intensive<br />

in-house feeding (SILAGE, CONCENTRATES) or 17-30<br />

m<strong>on</strong>ths for grazed animals.
