Manufactured or naturally occurring products or substances<br />

that are added to MANURES to modify their biological,<br />

chemical or physical properties. Many additives are<br />

commercially available but most have not been subjected to<br />

independent testing so their effectiveness is uncertain. They<br />

include:<br />

• BACTERIAL ENZYME PREPARATIONS.<br />

• PLANT EXTRACTS.<br />

• OXIDISING AGENTS.<br />

• DISINFECTANTS.<br />

• UREASE INHIBITORS.<br />

• MASKING AGENTS.<br />

• ACID, ACIDIFYING COMPOUNDS.<br />

• ADSORBENTS.<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. Many claims are made c<strong>on</strong>cerning their<br />

effectiveness including breakdown <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> CRUSTS, ODOUR<br />

reducti<strong>on</strong> and stabilisati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> LIQUID MANURES.<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. Some are claimed to reduce ODOUR and<br />

AMMONIA EMISSIONS.<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. These are intended to have a similar effect<br />

as AEROBIC TREATMENT.<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. These are intended to have a<br />

SANITATION effect for LIQUID MANURES.<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. These block the transformati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> urea,<br />

that is c<strong>on</strong>tained in the urine <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>livestock</strong>, to AMMONIUM<br />

compounds. The latter breakdown to release AMMONIA gas,<br />

so UREASE INHIBITORS have potential for reducing<br />

AMMONIA EMISSION from MANURES.<br />

Substances that stop or delay the process <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NITRIFICATION,<br />

the transformati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> amm<strong>on</strong>ium nitrogen to nitrates.<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. These are intended to reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fensive<br />

ODOUR by replacing, or masking, them with a more pleasant<br />

ODOUR.<br />

ACID Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. Under acidic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s (pH 4-5),<br />

AMMONIUM nitrogen remains in soluti<strong>on</strong> rather than being<br />

released into the air as AMMONIA gas. Hence, reducing the<br />

pH <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> LIQUID MANURE by adding acid can reduce the<br />

potential for AMMONIA EMISSION.<br />

ACIDIFYING<br />

COMPOUNDS<br />

Type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ADDITIVE. ACID or chemical compounds that<br />

decrease the pH <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> e.g. LIQUID MANURES.
