Process whereby PLANT NUTRIENTS in inorganic form are<br />
c<strong>on</strong>verted to organic forms by incorporati<strong>on</strong> into microorganisms.<br />
These nutrients are then temporarily unavailable for<br />
PLANT UPTAKE.<br />
The transformati<strong>on</strong>, most comm<strong>on</strong>ly by bacteria, <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NITRATES<br />
to NITROUS OXIDE and nitrogen gas. An ANAEROBIC<br />
process that occurs in soils and in MANURE STORES and in<br />
some TREATMENT methods, after a NITRIFICATION period.<br />
The transformati<strong>on</strong> by bacteria <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> AMMONIUM nitrogen to<br />
nitrites and then to NITRATES. An AEROBIC process that may<br />
occur in soils and during AERATION <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> LIQUID MANURES.<br />
The transformati<strong>on</strong> by microorganisms <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> organic compounds<br />
to inorganic compounds e.g. in soils, stored MANURES.<br />
AMMONIFICATION Process by which some soil organisms, "amm<strong>on</strong>ifiers", c<strong>on</strong>vert<br />
organic nitrogen, e.g. in soils, MANURES, to amm<strong>on</strong>ium i<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
ACIDIFICATION<br />
The process by which soil or surface waters become increasing<br />
acid (lower pH) e.g. through DEPOSITION <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> AMMONIA or<br />
sulphur dioxide or NO x .<br />
EUTROPHICATION Process <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NUTRIENT ENRICHMENT in water or,<br />
occasi<strong>on</strong>ally, soil, resulting in oxygen depleti<strong>on</strong> in aquatic<br />
ecosystems, in loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> biodiversity etc.<br />

RUN-OFF<br />
An excess <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nutrient input into an ecosystem, which in<br />
sensitive ecosystems results in EUTROPHICATION.<br />
The flow <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> rainfall, irrigati<strong>on</strong> water, liquid <strong>manure</strong> etc. over<br />
land. RUN-OFF can cause polluti<strong>on</strong> by transporting pollutants<br />
e.g. in MANURES to surface waters.<br />

DEPOSITION<br />
The loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> soluble elements and compounds from soil in<br />

GROUND WATER. This applies especially to NITRATE<br />
LEACHING.<br />
The process by which AMMONIA gas is released from a<br />
soluti<strong>on</strong><br />
The transfer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a pollutant e.g. AMMONIA from the atmosphere<br />
to a terrestrial sink such as land, water or plants.<br />
• Dry DEPOSITION. DEPOSITION as a gas or particles.<br />
• Wet DEPOSITION. DEPOSITION in precipitati<strong>on</strong><br />
(rainfall, snow)
