RATIO.<br />

A measure <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the hydrogen i<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a soluti<strong>on</strong> and<br />

an indicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> its` acidity or alkalinity. Expressed <strong>on</strong> a scale<br />

from 0 to 14, 7 is neutral, higher values more alkaline, lower<br />

values more acid.<br />

DRY MATTER<br />

Total suspended matter in liquid, which is comm<strong>on</strong>ly<br />

expressed as a c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>terms</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> milligrams per unit<br />

volume or weight. Normally determined by collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> solids<br />

<strong>on</strong> a filter paper.<br />

Suspended matter in liquid.<br />

The weight loss after a sample <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> TOTAL SOLIDS is ignited in<br />

a furnace (heated to dryness at 550°C).<br />

The weight loss after a sample <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> SUSPENDED SOLIDS is<br />

ignited in a furnace (heated to dryness at 550 o C).
