We owe our <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> Team success <strong>to</strong> the many<br />

groups—our Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees, Chai Club, Green<br />

We can feel proud that we really walked the walk for<br />

justice—<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g all <strong>of</strong> our virtual walkers <strong>and</strong> supporters.<br />

Thank you for your amaz<strong>in</strong>g support <strong>in</strong> th<strong>is</strong> year’s<br />

An AfterNOON IN the City – CommuNIty OrGANIZING<br />

On Sunday, July 12, 2009, 800 people from across Los Angeles poured <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Wilshire Boulevard <strong>Temple</strong><br />

for a One LA-IAF community action <strong>to</strong> express our collective concern about <strong>is</strong>sues fac<strong>in</strong>g Los Angeles.<br />

Forty-eight Isaians were among them! We were people from the many different faith <strong>and</strong> ethnic<br />

communities <strong>of</strong> Los Angeles: our different faces, languages, <strong>and</strong> amulets around our necks reflected the<br />

beautiful diversity <strong>of</strong> our city. The community action focused on quality public education, job-tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>and</strong> roll<strong>in</strong>g back foreclosures. Cons<strong>is</strong>tent with the style <strong>of</strong> community actions, each <strong>is</strong>sue was expla<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

by a presenter <strong>and</strong> was illustrated with s<strong>to</strong>ries by people impacted by the <strong>is</strong>sue, <strong>and</strong> a solution <strong>to</strong> a piece<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>is</strong>sue was proposed. The public <strong>of</strong>ficials <strong>in</strong> attendance – Controller Wendy Greuel, LAUSD<br />

Super<strong>in</strong>tendent Ramon Cort<strong>in</strong>es, L.A. City Council-members Jose Huizar, Bernard Parks, <strong>and</strong> Jan Perry<br />

– each responded, each embrac<strong>in</strong>g the solution proposed by One LA. When asked if we are prepared<br />

<strong>to</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue our work, the crowd responded with a resound<strong>in</strong>g “yes.” Our own Rabb<strong>in</strong>ic Intern Rachel<br />

Joseph Marah <strong>to</strong>ok a leadership role <strong>in</strong> plann<strong>in</strong>g the event <strong>and</strong> was one <strong>of</strong> the program presenters.<br />

Our work at <strong>Isaiah</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> focus on our concerns with public education <strong>and</strong> strengthen<strong>in</strong>g westside<br />

schools. We are excited <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>volve more Isaians th<strong>is</strong> fall as we build relationships with pr<strong>in</strong>cipals, parents<br />

<strong>and</strong> teachers through our neighborhoods.<br />

SOVA <strong>is</strong> a Hebrew word that means<br />

“eat <strong>and</strong> be sat<strong>is</strong>fied.” We are currently<br />

experienc<strong>in</strong>g one <strong>of</strong> the worst times<br />

<strong>of</strong> food <strong>in</strong>security <strong>in</strong> which people<br />

are unable <strong>to</strong> purchase food <strong>to</strong> feed<br />

themselves <strong>and</strong> their families. SOVA<br />

food pantries provide free groceries<br />

<strong>and</strong> supportive resources <strong>to</strong> nearly<br />

7000 men, women <strong>and</strong> children<br />

each month, <strong>and</strong> sadly the number<br />

cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> grow. <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong> will<br />

be hold<strong>in</strong>g three major collections<br />

<strong>of</strong> food for SOVA: Yom Kippur (at<br />

the Century Plaza Hotel), Passover<br />

<strong>and</strong> Shavuot. We need your help! In<br />

addition <strong>to</strong> food donations, we are<br />

look<strong>in</strong>g for help with advert<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>in</strong>spir<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> collect<strong>in</strong>g. Contact<br />

Rabbi Dara Frimmer <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Temple</strong><br />

Office for more <strong>in</strong>formation. •<br />
