Who can imag<strong>in</strong>e the forbidd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

prophet Jeremiah arous<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

passionate love <strong>of</strong> a woman? Our<br />

own Rabbi Zoë Kle<strong>in</strong>!<br />

In her stunn<strong>in</strong>g first novel, Draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Dust, Kle<strong>in</strong> weaves Tanach, archeology,<br />

<strong>and</strong> ancient <strong>and</strong> modern Israel with<br />

stirr<strong>in</strong>g human desire. She delivers a<br />

romantic read rich <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g Biblical<br />

<strong>in</strong>formation, strong characters with ego<br />

<strong>and</strong> empathy, <strong>and</strong> lyrical prose. Th<strong>is</strong> well plotted novel starts slowly; stay<br />

with it; soon it proceeds at a smart pace, surpr<strong>is</strong><strong>in</strong>g tw<strong>is</strong>ts propell<strong>in</strong>g you<br />

through time, place <strong>and</strong> adventures <strong>to</strong> a sat<strong>is</strong>fy<strong>in</strong>g end.<br />

Archaeolog<strong>is</strong>t Page Brooks<strong>to</strong>ne, an American Chr<strong>is</strong>tian digg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Israel,<br />

leaves her tel <strong>to</strong> help a scorned Palest<strong>in</strong>ian couple whose home <strong>is</strong> mystically<br />

charged by romantic ghosts. With her kooky team, Page makes a major<br />

d<strong>is</strong>covery: Jeremiah had a muse <strong>and</strong> a lover, Anatiya, herself a poetic writer <strong>of</strong><br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g verses. As Page acts <strong>to</strong> proclaim <strong>and</strong> protect her work, determ<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

not <strong>to</strong> repeat the cl<strong>and</strong>est<strong>in</strong>e h<strong>is</strong><strong>to</strong>ry <strong>of</strong> the Dead Sea Scrolls, she f<strong>in</strong>ds herself<br />

on a voyage <strong>of</strong> self d<strong>is</strong>covery <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> love with an Orthodox Jew.<br />

The novel considers friendship, marriage <strong>and</strong> love juggl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>tellectual career<br />

pursuits through Jeremiah’s passion, Page’s quest <strong>and</strong> other subplots. Kle<strong>in</strong>’s<br />

lapidary language <strong>is</strong> the special quality here, especially <strong>in</strong> the fictional scrolls<br />

she creates for Anatiya.<br />

Kle<strong>in</strong>’s well-drawn characters, their failed or fruitful relationships, mirror the<br />

<strong>in</strong>terfaith, mult<strong>in</strong>ational character <strong>of</strong> the fiction’s sett<strong>in</strong>g: contemporary Israel.<br />

Kle<strong>in</strong> skillfully utilizes Israel’s political tensions, religious clashes <strong>and</strong> the rules<br />

<strong>of</strong> archeological claims <strong>to</strong> naturally sharpen her fictional drama. Draw<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Dust will draw you <strong>in</strong> <strong>and</strong> hold you. Let the Library draw you <strong>to</strong> it.<br />
