As the <strong>in</strong>com<strong>in</strong>g Vice President <strong>of</strong> Membership at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>Isaiah</strong>, I am very curious about all our<br />
<strong>Temple</strong> members. It <strong>is</strong> my goal <strong>to</strong> ensure that all our members know that they are valued, <strong>and</strong> that their<br />
membership needs are be<strong>in</strong>g filled.<br />
Th<strong>is</strong> year, we want <strong>to</strong> learn more about you! We’d like <strong>to</strong> strengthen your <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Temple</strong> as<br />
members <strong>and</strong> as volunteers. While we know how many preschool <strong>and</strong> religious school families we have,<br />
we haven’t quantified many other important affiliations: i.e., how many <strong>of</strong> you are empty nesters, retirees,<br />
<strong>in</strong>terfaith, s<strong>in</strong>gle, divorced, widowed, or without children?<br />
We will be send<strong>in</strong>g you a short survey <strong>to</strong> ask for th<strong>is</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation. When you receive the survey, please<br />
answer it! The more responses we get, the better we can be at mak<strong>in</strong>g membership as mean<strong>in</strong>gful as<br />
possible.<br />
I want <strong>to</strong> thank Lynn Rogo, the past Vice President <strong>of</strong> Membership, for all she accompl<strong>is</strong>hed. She<br />
<strong>in</strong>troduced the successful Ambassador program <strong>and</strong> helped <strong>to</strong> rebuild a thriv<strong>in</strong>g women’s group, <strong>Isaiah</strong><br />
Women, which attracted nearly 200 women <strong>in</strong> its first year. Yasher koach, Lynn!<br />
The aforementioned survey will not be ready for a few months, so <strong>in</strong> the meantime, I welcome your<br />
comments about membership <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vite you <strong>to</strong> get more <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong>/or volunteer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
opportunities.<br />
Feel free <strong>to</strong> email me at jillesmith1@gmail.com <strong>and</strong> put the word “membership” <strong>in</strong> the subject l<strong>in</strong>e.•<br />

An Even More Eternal Light - Next time you are <strong>in</strong> the sanctuary, gaze up<br />
at our solar-powered Ner Tamid. Hardly an eye-catcher before, but now,<br />
from most vantage po<strong>in</strong>ts, it sparkles brilliantly, us<strong>in</strong>g only power it gets from<br />
the sun, sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g a light not just <strong>in</strong> space, but also through time. It sh<strong>in</strong>es above<br />
the ark, light<strong>in</strong>g the way <strong>to</strong> the Torah, <strong>and</strong> symbolizes God’s eternal presence, <strong>and</strong> <strong>is</strong><br />
therefore never <strong>to</strong> be ext<strong>in</strong>gu<strong>is</strong>hed. Sh<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the past, we see oil lamps (menorahs)<br />
burn<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the <strong>Temple</strong> from even<strong>in</strong>g until morn<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> the cont<strong>in</strong>uously burn<strong>in</strong>g fire<br />
on the altar for burnt <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs. Illum<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g the future, it <strong>in</strong>forms our path with the message,<br />
“Live susta<strong>in</strong>ably.” Use only what can easily be replaced, <strong>and</strong> do no harm other than that which<br />
quickly heals.<br />
The <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>is</strong> grateful <strong>to</strong> the Board <strong>of</strong> Rabb<strong>is</strong> who organized th<strong>is</strong> project <strong>and</strong> the AQMD<br />
(Air Quality Management D<strong>is</strong>trict) who helped sponsor it, giv<strong>in</strong>g twelve congregations the<br />
wonderment <strong>of</strong> what a 1 Watt bulb can do, <strong>and</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g a constant rem<strong>in</strong>der that there are<br />
solutions! Besides we do not have <strong>to</strong> depend on the limited resources that we need <strong>to</strong> share<br />
with our children <strong>and</strong> future generations. •<br />
