While the outreach worker supplies the knowledge regarding eye health and glaucoma, these community leaders have been providing their expertise on how and when the outreach session should take place, what works for their specific group and what to avoid. Their endorsement of eye health messages helps reinforce their importance. And developing these relationships often leads to introductions to other organisations, enabling expansion of the networks. It was also clear from the focus groups that people respond to ‘experts through experience’, so where possible we will encourage members of the communities who have glaucoma to share their experiences around diagnosis and treatment, and the impact it has had on their life. It will not always be possible to do this, so we will try to include real-life stories as case studies where appropriate. This will help raise the profile of blind or partially sighted people within their communities, something that is currently limited. We are also investigating other routes to reaching those who do not visit community or religious centres, including places of work, libraries and shopping centres. Instead of going to places where people are prepared to talk to us, this will entail directly approaching community members to share the messages. Tools to help With key health messages tested within the focus groups, we have been developing appropriate leaflets and posters to support the outreach delivery. Examples have been tested within focus groups to ensure that the messages we want to deliver are presented in a way that is engaging and meaningful to the members of the communities we most want to reach. 38 Other stakeholders Throughout this pilot, we have worked closely with the local optical committee to ensure that optometry practices in the boroughs are aware of the project and will test and refer people appropriately, and with primary care trusts (PCTs) in the boroughs. Health trainers Working closely with the PCTs has led to Lewisham agreeing that their health trainers will be trained in delivering eye health messages. This will benefit the pilot but also leaving a legacy of eye health promotion after the pilot finishes. All three PCTs, health trainers will be provided with the leaflets and posters for use in their community sessions. Continually learning Apart from raising awareness of glaucoma to those most at risk, one of the aims of the pilot is to ensure that we learn from this work. This is in part for our own benefit, to ensure a more informed approach to future work to prevent avoidable sight loss. But we also want to share our learning with partners in the voluntary and statutory sector and enable others to learn from it as well.
