General Information Read all information at the Assessment website, which includes drop-in test hours, information for out-of-area students, sample test questions, and information for students who need extended time or another accommodation for disability. After you have read about Assessment, check all that apply: qA. I am required to take a math assessment test. qB. I am required to take the English assessment test. qC. I have a college transcript that may exempt me from testing. qD. I have specific test scores that may exempt me from testing. If you checked box A and/or B, go to ‘Preparing for Assessment’ at the Assessment website. Download and complete the 4 steps on the REAP Test Preparation Form. If you checked box C and/or D, submit your transcript or test score report and a Prerequisites Challenge Form at www.sbcc.edu/prerequisite. Complete the form and submit it with supporting documentation for review and possible exemption from testing. Important: Your SBCC Student I.D. number and photo identification are required for testing. ADVISING Completing Advising/Academic Planning is required of all students who have never attended college, or attended only while in high school, and who plan to earn an Associate Degree, and/ or transfer to a four-year college. Advising is also strongly recommended for returning students and students transferring to SBCC from another institution. If you are transferring from other colleges or universities, you should confirm that your official college transcripts are on file with the Admissions & Records Office by reviewing your Pipeline account prior to meeting with a counselor. You should bring unofficial copies to the advising session. 10 At Academic Advising/Planning we will assist you in: • Learning about SBCC degree requirements • Learning about transfer requirements • Choosing appropriate courses to meet your educational goal • Interpreting English and math assessment test results • Understanding prerequisites and skills advisories • Understanding registration procedures • Developing a first semester course schedule that considers your assessment results, educational goals, time line, study skills, work and personal responsibilities For Fall 2013 registration complete one of these options: Option 1: Online New Student Academic Advising This online program will assist you in the development of a first semester course plan. You will learn about key concepts to consider when selecting your classes. You are strongly urged to take the assessment tests in English and math before completing new student advising. To begin the program, you will be asked to log into your Pipeline account, so be sure to have your log-in information ready. Your advising hold will be cleared within 48 business hours. (If you are a new student you will not be able to register until the hold is cleared.) Once you have completed advising you should be prepared to choose your first semester classes. If you are still unsure about how to proceed, download the online handout with a summary of guidelines for first semester course planning. www.sbcc.edu/advising Option 2: On-Campus New Student Academic Advising Sessions For new Fall 2013 students, Academic Advising Sessions are held from April to August. All Academic Advising sessions take place in a computer lab on the SBCC campus with counselors. You will be notified of your session date within 48 business hours. Space is limited to 18-24 students per session depending on computer availability. If you sign up and then complete online advising instead, or if you need to cancel, let us know as soon as possible by replying to your confirmation email, so space will be available for other new students. Before you attend the 2.5-hour Academic Advising Session, you must take your assessment exams and complete Orientation. Bring your assessment results, if available, and Pipeline username and password to the session. You will be able to register for classes provided you have your assessment results and you attend a session that takes place on or after your individual registration date. To access your personal registration date, log onto your Pipeline account, click on registration, then check your pre-registration requirements and appointment. The specific dates and times for New Student Academic Advising will be listed by the first week of April, at which time you can save a space, 2-3 weeks in advance, for an on-campus session. www.sbcc.edu/advising Option 3: Individual Advising Session ONLY for New Transfer Students from other Colleges and Universities New transfer students from other colleges and universities may meet with an academic counselor for quick questions at the front desk or by scheduling a same-day appointment in person during regular service hours. Students may schedule a maximum of two same-day appointments per semester. Before new transfer students come to campus for a same-day appointment, they should check their Pipeline account to ensure SBCC has received all outside college transcripts www.sbcc.edu/admissions/files/Incoming TranscriptsReceived.pdf. If not, they should have them with them at the time of the appointment. We strongly recommend calling in

HIT/CIM students must go to www.sbcc.edu/hit for student education plans, transcript evaluations and academic counseling support. Apply: Apply online in English or Spanish at www.sbcc.edu/apply, or pick up an SBCC application form from Admissions & Records (SS-110), or the ESL Office (ESL-2). Information on ESL Orientation and Advising will be provided at Assessment. Assessment Center Hours April 1 – August 30 (closed June 19 – 21) Monday – Thursday: 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Wednesday: until 6:00 p.m., beginning April 10 Lab hours subject to change.
