The most recent addition to the countrywestern
scene is American Cowgirls (500 NE
MLK Jr Blvd, 233-2211, americancowgirlsbarandgrill.net),
where clubbers celebrate the Old West in a
bright, fresh atmosphere (no squeaky saloon
doors, hay or dingy chairs in sight). Owner
Christine Oakland and her husband opened
American Cowgirls in early June, a nostalgic
homage to how they partied when they were
younger. They purposely built their bar three
feet wide to encourage the ladies to get on top
and dance, Coyote Ugly-style. “We call the bar
our stage,” Oakland says. “We want people to
get noticed.” Accenting the wide, open room
is a shiny red car, cowhide pattern chairs and
ladders to aid in climbing on the bar. Flair
bartending is another highlight at American
Cowgirls, so in between watching women
shake it, you can enjoy the show of twirling,
flying bottles, shakers and glasses.
While still in the process of finding the
perfect theme night schedule, the club currently
hosts Wednesday karaoke nights (with
a $250 cash prize for the audience’s favorite
singer), Thursday ladies nights featuring ‘80s
tunes, and Friday and Saturday party nights
with a mixture of country, rock and dance
music. And how have Portlanders responded?
According to Oakland, their grand opening
was jam-packed and they’ve been so busy in
the past two months that they’re already working
on building a larger dance floor. “We’ll
have line dances and couples swingin’, but
if a top 40 song comes on, people will start
dancing to that, too,” Oakland notes. To get
fueled for all that dancing, down a Cowgirl
Koolaid (Skyy Berry vodka, Midori, Amaretto
and cranberry juice) or the Cowboy Koolaid
(same recipe plus Jägermeister). The bar is
also open for lunch, and the fare is healthier
than you might think. Burgers, entrée salads,
wraps, and chicken sandwiches made with
fresh vegetables and organic greens are on the
menu.
Thunder Ranch Saloon (13456 SE McLoughlin
Blvd, 653-7625, thunderranchsaloon.com), a sort of
destination option, fueled the local countrywestern
trend when they opened last year.
You’ll never get bored with the combination
of live music, dance floors, a mechanical bull
and the Jack Daniels Shot Chair. With a revamped
event calendar and new management,
