Joint DOE-DOD Nuclear Weapons Classification Guide, CG-W-4: <strong>The</strong><br />

Technical Guidance Division, Office ofNuclear and National Securiry<br />

Infonnation has reviewed field comments concerning tbe rescission ofCG-W-4.<br />

Comments received recommended that 57 topics be carried forward from<br />

CG-W-4 to 12 existing or proposed new guides. Ofthese 57. a total of41 were<br />

recommended for inclusion in CG-W-5, TCG-WPMU- l, or TCG-NAS-2. Of<br />

these 57, 22 were unc1assified topics and eight were Fonnerly Restricted Data<br />

(FRD). With the exception of one accident-related FRD topic, the remaining<br />

seven are concerned with nuclear storage sites. In two cases, apparently,<br />

conflicting guidance was identified. Only three topics were identified more than<br />

once. Only one topic identified was recommended for declassification.<br />

A letter will be drafted to rescind CG-W -4 and list topics which will be conrinued<br />

to be used until such time that changes to existing guides, or new guides, which<br />

incorporate these topics or their content. are published.<br />

Classification Review Support: <strong>The</strong> Technical Guidance Division, Office of<br />

Nuclear and National Security Infonnation received a document from the<br />

Lawrence Livennore National Laboratory (LLNL) concerning Halite/Centurion<br />

(HIe) targets. It addresses issues concerning four HlC capsules that have recently<br />

been proposed for declassification. <strong>The</strong> Technical Evaluation Panel reviewed the<br />

LLNL proposal and recommended that the four capsules could be declassified.<br />

<strong>The</strong> paper discusses the funue of the inertial confmement fusion program using<br />

the results ofthe HlC tests as the basis for discussion. Review ofthe document<br />

should be completed by January 19. <strong>The</strong> document itself cannot be released until<br />

the declassification is complete.<br />

Security Infonnation is currently distributing the latest draft of CG-NEM-l , "Joint<br />

ClAIDoDIDOEIDOVDOS Classification Guide for Nuclear Explosion<br />

Monitoring," to all the signatory agencies and those individuals who provided<br />

comments on the last draft. Comments on the revised draft are due 45 days after<br />

receipt of the revised guide. At the request of the program office (the Office of<br />

Nonproliferation Research and Engineering), the Weapons Program, Technical
