Part One Ayr Central Conservation Area Character Appraisal Dansarena, Fort Street Temple-fronted relief church for the Auld Parish Kirk, designed by David Hamilton in 1807–10. Tam O’Shanter Inn, 230 High Street The last of the thatched cottages to survive at the south end of the High Street. Photographs from the second half of the 19th century show that this section of the High Street was once principally composed of this type of vernacular dwelling. The name of the inn is thought to have been adopted by an enterprising publican, John Glass, in the 1840s, cashing in on the success of Burns’ poem, rather being the genuine setting of the poem. Converted to a theatre in 1986, the building stands on a prominent site at the east end of New Brig, and encloses the northern end of River Street where it meets Main Street. Originally part of the High Street, the area behind was named as Hope Street from about 1855. At that time it had a bad reputation as a thieves’ den. The West Kirk Bar, Sandgate Although not of the highest level of architectural sophistication, the former Free Kirk of 1845 by William Gale makes a decent contribution to the variety of building styles and types in the Sandgate. Ayr Martyrs Free Church, George Street Constructed in 1832 as the first Reformed Presbyterian Church, or Covenanting Church, in Ayr.
