NATO/ShoWest '89 Welcome to NATO/ShoWest '89 By William F. Kartozian President National Association of Theatre Owners 1988— Another rexord boxoffice year! 1989— What will it hold for Exhibition? Clearly it is too soon to tell, but NATO/ShoWest '89 is a great way to begin! For the first time, all of Exhibition has come together to participate, innovate, celebrate and learn. And with our partners from NAC and TEA and many of our friends from Distribution, and under the always able leadership of ShoWest General Chairman Bob Selig, we can only hope that this wondrous and wonderful Convention and Trade Show (now only 15 years oldj portends a bountiful 1989 for us all. While Exhibition's progress in this decade has been phenomenal, this is not an industry content to rest on its laurels. I know that the dynamic leaders of Exhibition will embrace the ideas, improve upon the concepts and capitalize on the predictions set forth at ShoWest '89 to go forward to build an even stronger industry of which we can all be proud. willing to help in any way we can. NATO is Women In Exhibition By Mary Ann Grasso Executive Director National Association of Theatre Owners MY OBJECTIVE IN pulhng this panel together was to identify women in unexpected and powerful positions within the exhibition industry. As I began casting about for panelists, I was surprised and delighted to discover just how many women were already in positions of authority and had already manifested a significant influence within the industry. Our topic is the future: What do we need to know today to be successful exhibitors in the coming decade? We've assembled what I see as five pieces of a pie, each piece an element integral to the rimning of a successful company. We've assembled experts from the financial, buying/booking, inanagement /training, technological, and legal divisions of the industry, each of them unusually qualified to steer you in new and useful direc- • Peggj' Brockschmidt, director of financial planning for American Multi-Cinema, will serve as our finance authority. As an expert on financial forecasting, she will address the applications and uses of marketing research. • Lawryer Barrie Loeks is vice president and general counsel for Jack Loeks Theatres, Inc. as well as president and a 50-percent shareholder of Loeks Michigan Theatres, Inc. The Loeks chain ranks among the most innovative in the industry (especially in terms of employee motivational techniques) and Barrie's topics will include training innovations and what operational concerns the future holds. • Barbara Stokes has wide-ranging experience in marketing, advertising and public relations— including an 11-year stint with AMC. She will speak on theatre technology (state-of-the-art as well as BEYOND state-of-the-art), and the necessity and importance of booth training. • Legal issues will be addressed by another attorney on the panel. Gail Markels, legislative counsel and counsel to the Classification and Rating Administration, Motion Picture Association of America, will discuss First Amendment legislation and how theatre owners can protect themselves from the spectre of censorship. She will also discuss how exhibitors can influence legislation that can or will affect them. . Rounding out the pane! will be Victoria Hawker, for more than a decade a highlyrespected buyer /booker for Seattle-based Northwest Diversified Entertainment.
