www.spectroscopyonline.com News Spectrum New Website for PIKE PIKE Technologies (Madison, Wisconsin) debuted a new company website, www.piketech.com in October. The company, which manufacturers sampling accessories for Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), near infrared, and ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectrometers, offers a list of all PIKE products, information about spectroscopy theory and sampling techniques, multiple application notes, and other technology and industry-related details on its website. The PIKE home page provides an interactive infrared crystal properties chart and an FT-IR calculator for wavelength conversions, sample thickness, and average true range calculations. The website’s search function generates product information, and there is an online form available for order placement and quote requests. Sabine Becker Wins the 2012 Winter Conference Award in Plasma Spectrochemistry J. Sabine Becker, the head of trace and ultratrace analysis in the Central Division of Analytical Chemistry at the Research Center Juelich, in Juelich, Germany, has won the 2012 Winter Conference Award in Plasma Spectrochemistry, sponsored by Thermo Fisher Scientific (San Jose, California). Thermo Fisher will present the award and a check for $5000 to Becker during the 2012 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry, to be held in Tucson, Arizona, January 9–14, 2012. December 2011 Spectroscopy 26(12) 9 Becker’s career in analytical chemistry has focused on long-lived radionuclides, ultratrace and high-purity materials analysis, isotope ratio measurements, and micro- and nanolocal elemental and trace analyses. Recently she established BrainMet, an Analytical Center of Excellence at the Research Centre Juelich for brain research imaging. Based on laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), BrainMet has introduced novel imaging techniques for metals, metalloids, and nonmetals in biological tissues. The approach provides quantitative mapping of essential and toxic elements in thin sections of diseased and healthy medical and biological tissue sections. The Winter Conference Award in Plasma Spectrochemistry, established in 2009, recognizes scientists who have made noteworthy contributions over time or through a single, significant breakthrough. The award acknowledges achievements in the conceptualization and development of novel instrumentation as well as the elucidation of fundamental events or processes involved in plasma spectrochemistry. Winners include authors of significant research papers or books that influence new advancements or pioneers of outstanding new applications that benefit the field of plasma spectrochemistry. Applications for the next Winter Plasma Award in 2014 may be submitted until December 31, 2012. Further information is available at www.thermoscientific.com/wpcaward. ◾ Market Profile: Microvolume UV–vis Spectroscopy Microvolume UV–vis is a relatively new segment of the UV–vis spectroscopy market that has seen very rapid development. There are a variety of purpose-built microvolume instruments as well as adaptor accessories now on the market, most of which are designed for bioanalysis applications. Several major instrument vendors compete in the market, although Thermo Scientific still dominates. Microvolume UV–vis spectrophotometers can analyze sample sizes of under 5 μL, and in some cases, as small as 0.5 μL. There are now a variety of microvolume UV–vis instruments on the market that are specifically designed for the analysis of such volumes. Vendors have also 2011 microvolume UV–vis vendor share. developed a wide range of sampling accessories to allow for microvolume analysis using conventional UV–vis instruments. Microvolume spectroscopy was developed largely to address the needs of those performing bioanalysis, including the quantitation of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Despite broad economic headwinds coming in 2012, demand for microvolume UV–vis should continue to grow due to the expansion of the biotechnology and clinical analysis industries, as well as the continued adoption of the technique. Thermo Scientific, which acquired the first major developer of microvolume spectrophotometers, Nanodrop, is the strong leader in the market. Thermo Scientific Shimadzu and GE Healthcare are the other two major competitors. Several smaller vendors have since developed their own versions of dedicated microvolume instruments.
