Trespassers set small fire in
abandoned building
WEBSTER — At approximately 7:50 p.m.
Friday, Feb. 20, Webster Police Dispatch
received a call reporting an unknown type
fire in the area of 359-385 block of Main
Street.
This report was unclear as to whether or
not the fire was inside the building or outside.
The 359-385 block of Main St. has been
condemned by the Webster Board of Health
and has been clearly posted as such as well as
posted no trespassing.
Upon arrival at the scene, Det. Wentworth
observed flames to be visible in the basement
of the rear of 385 Main St. Detective
Wentworth was also able to see two subjects
inside the building. These subjects were
later identified as Michael Buduo, 43, of 37 E.
Main St. in Webster and Miguel Mercado, 43,
of 4 Oak St., Dudley. These subjects initially
denied knowledge of any fire, which had
been extinguished prior to the subjects exiting
the building.
Upon entering and inspecting the building,
Det. Wentworth and Assistant Webster Fire
Chief Brian Hickey located three canisters
of a wax type substance that had been
burned. These objects were located just
inside the door, which had been broken into.
One canister was still smoldering and the
basement was full of smoke. Evidence at the
scene suggested that the fire had been extinguished
with a bottle of beer and that there
was no extension.
During the questioning, the two subjects
stated they had entered the building to have
some beers and started the fire in order to
keep warm. They stated they had been frequenting
the building for about a month.
The building in question had been previously
been condemned due to its extremely
deteriorating conditions. The building is
known to public safety responders in town to
have many holes in the floor and collapsing
areas.
These subjects were subsequently placed
under arrest. They were transported to the
Webster Police Department where they were
booked and charged with breaking and
entering with the intent to commit a misdemeanor
trespassing.
Bail was set at $200 each and both subjects
were being held in the Webster Police
Lockup Facility.
