Trespassers set small fire in<br />

abandoned building<br />

WEBSTER — At approximately 7:50 p.m.<br />

Friday, Feb. 20, Webster Police Dispatch<br />

received a call reporting an unknown type<br />

fire in the area of 359-385 block of Main<br />

Street.<br />

This report was unclear as to whether or<br />

not the fire was inside the building or outside.<br />

The 359-385 block of Main St. has been<br />

condemned by the Webster Board of Health<br />

and has been clearly posted as such as well as<br />

posted no trespassing.<br />

Upon arrival at the scene, Det. Wentworth<br />

observed flames to be visible in the basement<br />

of the rear of 385 Main St. Detective<br />

Wentworth was also able to see two subjects<br />

inside the building. These subjects were<br />

later identified as Michael Buduo, 43, of 37 E.<br />

Main St. in Webster and Miguel Mercado, 43,<br />

of 4 Oak St., Dudley. These subjects initially<br />

denied knowledge of any fire, which had<br />

been extinguished prior to the subjects exiting<br />

the building.<br />

Upon entering and inspecting the building,<br />

Det. Wentworth and Assistant Webster Fire<br />

Chief Brian Hickey located three canisters<br />

of a wax type substance that had been<br />

burned. These objects were located just<br />

inside the door, which had been broken into.<br />

One canister was still smoldering and the<br />

basement was full of smoke. Evidence at the<br />

scene suggested that the fire had been extinguished<br />

with a bottle of beer and that there<br />

was no extension.<br />

During the questioning, the two subjects<br />

stated they had entered the building to have<br />

some beers and started the fire in order to<br />

keep warm. They stated they had been frequenting<br />

the building for about a month.<br />

The building in question had been previously<br />

been condemned due to its extremely<br />

deteriorating conditions. The building is<br />

known to public safety responders in town to<br />

have many holes in the floor and collapsing<br />

areas.<br />

These subjects were subsequently placed<br />

under arrest. They were transported to the<br />

Webster Police Department where they were<br />

booked and charged with breaking and<br />

entering with the intent to commit a misdemeanor<br />

trespassing.<br />

Bail was set at $200 each and both subjects<br />

were being held in the Webster Police<br />

Lockup Facility.<br />
