Nichols College Career Fair open to the public Nichols professor awarded for distinguished scholarship DUDLEY — Dr. Karen Sasha Tipper, Nichols College professor, has authored a transcription of Lady Jane Wilde’s letters to Fröken Lotten von Kræmer, 1857-1885, published by the Edwin Mellen Press of Lewiston, N.Y. Courtesy photo For her dedicated Dr. Karen Sasha Tipper and distinguished scholarship, Dr. Tipper has been awarded “The Adèle Mellen Prize.” This book is the first of a multi-volume series focused on the letters of Oscar Wilde’s loving mother, Lady Jane Wilde. Lady Wilde was a fiery nationalist poet, a scholar, and a proponent of women’s education. Appendices in this volume include a brief life chronology of both Jane Wilde and Lotten von Kræmer and samples of her letters, which are housed in the National Library of Stockholm, Sweden. “It took great scholarly discipline and dedication for Dr. Tipper to publish this volume of 40 letters from Dublin-based Lady Wilde to her Swedish friend,” said Dr. Alan Reinhardt, Nichols College vice president for academic affairs and dean. “I am delighted that Dr. Tipper has focused her research on correspondence between two enlightened women who used their intellect to write and improve the social conditions of their time.” Dr. Tipper is professor and chair of English at Nichols College in Dudley. She has presented a number of papers on the Wilde family, has published articles on Oscar Wilde and Lady Jane Wilde in The Wildean. A Journal of Oscar Wilde Studies, and has published a definitive critical biography of Lady Jane Wilde. Dr. Tipper received an A.B. from Mount Holyoke College, an M.A. from Washington University, St. Louis, and a Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has been a Visiting Scholar and Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge. She has three children: Geoffrey, Christopher, and Megan, and resides in Northborough with her husband, Don. Crawford Memorial Library: a one-year term; a twoyear term; and a three-year term. Persons interested may pick up nomination forms by Monday, March 16, at the Town Clerk’s office on the second floor of the Municipal Complex, 71 West Main Street in Dudley. The last day for candidates to submit nomination papers to the Town Clerk/Board of Registrars with the 50 certified signatures required, is Monday, March 16, at 5 p.m. The town election will take place on Monday, May 4. Lutheran and Methodist Churches plan joint Lenten services OXFORD — During the Lenten season, members of Zion Lutheran Church, 70 S. Main St., and members of the Oxford United Methodist Church, 465 Main St., will join together for a weeknight service. The Methodist Church begins the series on Ash Wednesday with services at both 1 and 7 p.m. Similarly, the Lutheran Church will end the series on Good Friday with services at 1 and 7 p.m. During the intervening weeks the two congregations will meet on Tuesday evenings for a soup supper at 6 p.m. and then a joint service at 7 p.m. The Methodist Church will host Tuesday March 3, 17, and 31. The Lutheran Church will host March 10 and March 24. This is the second year of walking together during Lent. Both Pastor Andrew Simon of the Lutheran Church and Pastor Paula Fletcher of the Methodist Church have indicated that this Lenten partnership gives both congregations an opportunity to “make new friends in the faith, and grow spiritually through cooperative-shared worship.” The community is cordially invited to participate in both the weekly Lenten services and in the Tuesday evening soup suppers. Students also collected hygiene items (100-plus per classroom, 706 items total), pictured, for Pastor Muriel and The Victory Center on Pleasant Street in Worcester.
