SHREWSBURY<br />
The 19th annual Betty Curtis Worcester<br />
County Young Writers’ Conference will<br />
take place Saturday, March 7, from 8:30 a.m.<br />
to 6:15 p.m. at Saint John’s High School. The<br />
conference is open to all Worcester County<br />
boys and girls in grades 7-12.<br />
Students will work in small groups led by<br />
local professional writers Alex Charalamides,<br />
Jim Beschta, Rodger Martin, Beth Sweeney,<br />
Don Unger, Laurel King, Linda Warren,<br />
Camille LaCroix-Moulton, John Deedy,<br />
Russell McClintock and Joe Hurka. Students<br />
have the opportunity to try two of four genres<br />
(poetry, fiction, playwriting, and creative<br />
nonfiction) and to hear poetry and fiction<br />
readings by the writing mentors.<br />
The day will end with readings by students<br />
and a keynote address by University of<br />
Massachusetts-Amherst professor, poet and<br />
essayist Martin Espada.<br />
Registration forms are due Feb. 13. Attendees<br />
are urged to register early as space is limited.<br />
The $40 registration fee includes a writing<br />
notebook, lunch and a snack.<br />
The Betty Curtis Worcester County Young<br />
Writers’ Conference encourages writing and<br />
enhances the creative writing skills of high<br />
school students. The annual event, sponsored<br />
by Saint John’s High School, has been made<br />
possible through contributions from sports<br />
author Daniel Doyle ’67, and the family of<br />
Betty Curtis. The conference honors Mrs.<br />
Curtis for the sacrifices she made to send her<br />
son, businessman Skip Curtis ’85, to Saint<br />
John’s High School, and the emphasis she<br />
placed on the importance of writing while<br />
Skip was at Saint John’s. Members of the Pen<br />
and Ink Society, a student-run club under the<br />
direction of Saint John’s faculty member<br />
Diane Mulligan, organize and staff the conference,<br />
which has attracted more than 2,000<br />

with the Charlton Lions’ Club’s Annual<br />
Frosty Fest on March 7. At 10 a.m., youngsters<br />

Charlton Library followed by a snowman<br />
building contest from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for<br />

show at Indian Ranch Sunday, March 15<br />
— Dudley Woman’s Club will host a<br />
Fashionista Spring Fling Fashion Show<br />
fundraiser on Sunday, March 15 at Indian<br />
Ranch in Webster. Doors open at 11 a.m. for a<br />
vendor boutique of crafts, fashion accessories,<br />
skin care products and more. A family<br />
style luncheon will follow, and at 1 p.m., Stein<br />
Mart, a national fashion retailer located in<br />
Massachusetts, at Bay State Commons in<br />
Westborough, will present spring and summer<br />
fashions for women and men.<br />
Tickets for this event are $25 per person, and<br />
may be purchased from any Dudley Woman’s<br />
Club member. “This is a major fundraiser for<br />
us. And one hundred percent of the profits<br />
will be returned to the community,” said<br />
Elaine Gould, president of the Dudley<br />
Woman’s Club.<br />

Great Stories of the Bible — Have you<br />
always wondered about some of the stories in<br />
the Bible? Do you remember hearing stories<br />
as a child, and would like to know more?<br />
Here’s your chance! For the next three<br />
months, Acts II Ministries will be conducting<br />
classes on Sundays evenings called “Great<br />
Stories of the Bible.” The focus will be on<br />
both well-known stories, as well as some of<br />
the more obscure stories from the Bible,<br />
using various teaching methods. These classes<br />
are taught as stand alone classes, and<br />
much benefit can be gained by attending all<br />
the classes, for a more well-rounded view of<br />
the Bible as literature.<br />
These classes are open to all, and would be<br />
beneficial to home-schoolers and retirees<br />
alike. Classes started Feb. 15 and will run on<br />
at Acts II Ministries Sunday evenings from<br />
5:45 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Certificates will be<br />
obtained and credits applied to the Acts II<br />
