6 • THE WEBSTER TIMES • Friday, February 27, 2009 www.<strong>webster</strong>times.net LEARNING Women’s club scholarship to benefit two local students BY JOY RICHARD TIMES STAFF WRITER DUDLEY — The Dudley Women’s Club will offer graduating seniors of Shepherd Hill Regional High School and Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School the opportunity to be awarded for their involvement in the Dudley community with two scholarships. The deadline for application is March 6. Each scholarship will be for $500 and available applications are at the Pearle J. Crawford Memorial Library, 1 Village St., Dudley, as well as the Town Clerk’s office, located on the second floor of the Municipal Complex, 71 W. Main Street, Dudley. The scholarships will be awarded at a Women’s Club banquet in May and the money will available to the students in January of 2010. Students applying for this award will be looked at in terms of their academic standing and having a great record of participation in the Dudley community over the course of their school careers. The Dudley Women’s Club, which was established last year off of the Oxford chapter, is part of the national General Federation of Women’s Clubs. Their main mission as a group is to serve the public. They emphasize the importance of literacy and learning in the projects that they take on. This new scholarship is the first major project of this kind for this chapter of the club. Chris Lavoie, who represents the Dudley chapter said, “Their main focus was to get this scholarship up and running,” adding that she is excited at how much people are giving to the cause and the group is aiming to either have more scholarships next year, or award a larger amount of money for this one. A goal that the club has for next year is to incorporate other towns being eligible to partake in this scholarship opportunity. “We don’t want students from the other schools in the region to feel left out,” she said. “With scholarships now becoming more and more necessary for students to go to the college of their choice, the club wants as many kids to get the chance as possible.” The money for the scholarship has been raised with various methods. Anytime there is a town event, such as the Tree Lighting in December, the club is there and takes donations. The response that the public has been very positive, Lavoie said. The largest fundraiser for the group at this point will be an upcoming fashion show and luncheon Sunday, March 15, at 11 a.m. Lunch will be at 12 p.m. and the show at 1 p.m. It should all wrap up at around 2:30 p.m. Along with those two events there will be 20 different venders on site so the audience can shop after the show. Tickets are $25 and are available by calling the Dudley Women’s Club at 508- 949-1251. Webster resident agrees to take helm of Northbridge schools BY THOMAS MATTSON STONEBRIDGE PRESS STAFF WRITER NORTHBRIDGE — Susan Gorky, of Webster, an administrator in the Marlborough school district, has accepted the three-year position of superintendent for the Northbridge schools. In a move that surprised just about everybody, Susan Cote, of East Bridgewater and the School Committee’s first choice, declined the position. She cited contract negotiation problems as the reason. School Committee Chairwoman Mary Contino telephoned Cote Feb. 4 after the board interviewed the three finalists for the job, telling her she was the committee’s choice. One stipulation the School Committee inserted into the prerequisites was that Cote cease pursuing any possible opportunities as superintendent in another district. On Feb. 13, Cote called Interim School Superintendent Henry O’Donnell to say she was declining the offer. She is currently assistant superintendent of the East Bridgewater schools. Cote attended a Northbridge School Committee meeting Tuesday, Feb. 10, at which O’Donnell laid out a detailed map of the school system past, present and perhaps future. Several panelists who voted for Cote were also impressed with Gorky. A number of board members commented on the excellence of all three finalists. The other finalist was Kelly Clenchy, of the Orono, Maine regional district. After the final interviews, the School Committee held a lively discussion before the decisive vote. A non-binding vote conducted by the nine members gave four votes to Cote, three to Gorky and two to Clenchy. Several committee members said they were uncertain, having a hard time choosing among the candidates. When Cote received eight of the nine votes, the School Committee took the next step, making the vote unanimous. Several committee members found themselves in a quandary because they thought all three candidates were excellent. Some members who voted for Cote or Clenchy made positive comments about Gorky. Before the final vote, panelists explained their straw votes. “I chose Gorky,” said Susan Brouwer. “She fits in the best.” She said she thought both Gorky and Cote were focused on children: “I could support either lady. They’re outstanding.” “I was very impressed with what Gorky did with her district,” said Karen Kittredge. But she, too, found it hard to decide. “Gorky is big on planning and strong for her plans,” said Michael McGrath. “Eighty-five percent of the teachers [interviewed in Marlborough] said they wanted to be with her,” said Brouwer. Richard DeLuca seemed to imply that if Gorky had more central office experience, her other qualities might persuade him to vote for her. “Gorky does need a little more financial background,” Brouwer conceded. SUMMER START The new superintendent is expected to begin in Northbridge July 1. Gorky is currently the director of Institutional Advancement and Special Programs for Marlborough public schools. Bartlett Jr./Sr. High School Scholarship Opportunity The Rita Zelinski Gelinas Student and Alumni Scholarships for the study of math or science are now available through the Bartlett High School Guidance Department. Any Bartlett Alumnus who is or will be pursuing full-time graduate studies in math or science is welcome to apply for the Alumni Scholarship. Any present senior who attends Bartlett Jr. Sr. High School and is pursing a career in a science or mathematics discipline is also encouraged to apply for the Student Scholarship. Both applications are available in the Bartlett High School Guidance Office. Applications are due in the guidance department by Friday, March 13. In Memory of Cheryl Marier Before beginning her current assignment in August 2008, Gorky was principal of a number of schools, including East Main Street School in Spencer from 1982 to 1985; Brookfield Elementary School from 1985-1987; Francis Kane School in Marlborough from 1987 to 2001; Charles J. Jaworek School, also in Marlborough, from 2001- 2004; Intermediate Donations may be made to the “Cheryl Marier Scholarship Fund.” The fund will benefit a student enrolled in the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School in Charlton. Gorky noted Marlborough public schools have an enrollment of 4,597 housed in six buildings. The intermediate elementary school she headed over four years had an enrollment of 740 in grades 4 and 5 and 120 staff members. Gorky received both her undergraduate degree — a bachelor of arts in elementary education, and a master of education degree in leadership and administration — at Worcester State College. She has a master’s degree plus 60 credits in continuing education, also from Worcester State College. She described her professional mission as to use “her skills in curriculum, instruction and professional development, leadership experience, participatory management style and creative abilities to bring excellence to district-wide educational programs and exemplary schools.” Gorky said it is her goal “to work in a district that will promote a collaborative environment where the family, school and community work together.” “Your focus on students is clear along with rigorous expectations for all learners,” she said to the committee. “The future of our children depends on what we set in motion today.” “I will maintain and develop Northbridge’s vision of excellence,” she said, “and I will clearly articulate and communicate that vision to the staffs, parents and community members.” OPENING STATEMENT Gorky In her opening statement to the committee, during the interviews Feb. 4, Gorky gave Northbridge good marks for its collaborative approach to education, in which family, school and community work together. “The future of our children depends on what we set in motion today,” she declared. She said every child’s education should be personalized. In a personal aside, Gorky said she almost came to Northbridge to accept her first job as a teacher at the Balmer School, but there were no jobs available, it turned out. She said she lived 26 years in Oxford and recently moved to Webster. “I’m familiar with the needs of the local community,” she said. She noted she has had the experience of teaching, of being a principal and of directing programs. “I’m a teacher first,” she said. “My leadership style centers round what’s best for each and every child.” She described herself as a collaborative leader. Moreover, she said, “All children deserve to be successful.” “Northbridge is a district on the move,” Gorky told the committee that working in a small community such as Northbridge “is really my dream.” Responding to a bevy of questions from committee members, Gorky said she is a strong proponent of “community-building.” She pointed out she has led a building committee and presided over reform —major change — in Marlborough. She acknowledged the community did not have a lot of trust in the system, so she engaged a team, working with administrators and supportive parents to improve the school. “We made changes in the climate in a short time,” Gorky said. Other support, she said, came from the school council, the PTO, business partners and the city council. “We built a true community,” she said. In another remark, Gorky said the Northbridge schools’ Special Education budget “is slightly disproportionate — a lot of money going to Special Education students. I believe in bringing back outsourced students to Northbridge schools.” She also said it should be a goal for all students to score “Proficient” on the MCAS tests. The needs of the gifted should also be met, she added. Gorky called technology an essential ingredient of the 21st century. DIGITAL LITERACY “It’s embedded in everything we do,” she said. “All teachers need to be digitally literate. Technology is a tool for learning.” On the issue of prioritizing needs, Gorky noted goals Northbridge has include a reduction in the size of its classes and the improvement of academic achievement. “We have to all know what our goals are,” she said. In regard to how she would relate to students from kindergarten through grade 12, Gorky said “With integrity.” Speaking of the financial situation Northbridge and other school systems find themselves in, Gorky said: “I think creatively the gap here can be closed. In other districts the gap is $3 million or $4 million. I’ve been in the position of reforming several times.” She said she favors formation of a superintendent’s advisory committee and said she would work closely with the union. To another question, Gorky said: “We agree to disagree behind closed doors, but to have a unified front outside.” She said the schools need “to nurture improvement as well as celebration.” Henry O’Donnell, the interim superintendent, had served the district for 11 years, through 2005, then retired. Paul Soojian succeeded O’Donnell, but left to take over the superintendency of Leicester schools last year. O’Donnell is expected to stay on through June. After that, Gorky, pending final negotiations, will assume control of the Northbridge school system. Presentation on College Admissions at Bartlett WEBSTER — Bartlett Jr. Sr. High School will host a presentation on college admissions Monday, March 23, at 7 p.m. Parents and students are invited to attend MEFA’s free comprehensive presentation on College Admissions. An experienced MEFA representative will discuss the college admissions process. The seminar will teach new students and parents what high school courses to take and offer tips for the college interview and essays. Families will receive a seminar booklet which serves as a year round resource. Time is allowed for questions and answers.
