Crawford Memorial Library project is inching closer to completion, with the recent announcement that a company has been chosen to head the project. Strategic Building Solutions, of Old Saybrook, Conn., was chosen by the Library Building Committee to complete the work. The amount of the bid for the project has not been made public. The site of the facility will be moved from its original location, on 1 Village St., to 40 Schofield Ave., the former home of Town Hall. The construction should begin for the new facility in early April. A tentative ceremony for the groundbreaking is being planned for Saturday, April 4. According to Library Director Jane Cain, the new building will be better suited for the town’s evergrowing population of more than 10,000, as opposed to the 3,553 that were residents at the time that the library was first built in 1901. In the new facility, there will be much more room for the always-expanding collection of books and resources (more than 20,000), that the library has collected over time. The library will be helpful in serving the new, diverse needs of the community as far as technology goes as well as accommodating Mother Nature with improvements in the technology used for heating, cooling and lighting. These different ways of helping keep things in tune with the ecosystem are all certified as well as with all of the other aspects of the library by the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) certification. “[The new library will be] one of the two facilities in the country to be LEED certified,” Cain said, adding that it is nothing new to be going the “green” route with new buildings — in fact, it is becoming the norm. Other environmentally friendly features include putting fewer impermeable surfaces on the site. This means that the amount of asphalt and concrete used will be much less than in any other complex around the area. This is better for the environment, due to the issue of runoff. The more asphalt and other impermeable surfaces, the more water that is going to runoff of the area. This causes erosion and possible flooding of surrounding roads and land. Taking the fact that they thought to fix this common issue ahead of time into thought, is a sign that even locally, people are starting to think more toward the benefiting the land and its ecosystems, as well as the town. The building itself will be one level spanning 16,750 square feet. Currently, costs for the facility are hovering around $6.7 million and construction is estimated at $5 million. Funding is in part being done by a grant given by the Webster Dudley Boys and Girls Club in an effort to see more teen involvement in the library. Along with the rest of the country, Dudley and its surrounding towns have been affected by the economic crunch and this stimulus money would be well used toward this project. The Library Building Committee has submitted this project to be considered for the federal program. This is in the hopes of receiving some of the billions of dollars that will be put in places for projects like this around the country. The proposed project meets two of the requirements that the program has — “shovel readiness” and a construction timeline of less than two years — which is a good sign in the hopes for being approved in the near future. A state grant has been issued to fund the construction as well for $2.3 million, with an additional $1.4-million from a municipal debt exclusion; a $2 million donation from Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Crawford; and $1 million in privet and corporate donations. With an end to the project finally in sight for the library, people in town and employees of the library are excited to see this achievement for themselves and the environment come to light. “[The project] was a long time coming,” Cane said. “With the economy the way it is, everyone is saying it’s the perfect time to build,” said Library Building Committee Co-Chair Anne Marie Safaee in January. “Our timing is so fortunate … this is something we’ve been working on for so long — to see it come together … it’s wonderful.” My guess for this week’s photo is: ______________________________________________ CONTEST ENTRY FORM: FEBRUARY 27, 2009CONTEST Deadline: March 5, 2009 Last week’s picture: St. Andrew Bobola Parish on West Main Street in Dudley. With the economy as it stands we understand everyone is having financial difficulties but we feel home safety should not be compromised. In an effort to keep the citizens of our community safe the Webster Fire Department has dedicated the grant money for this purpose. This program is provided at no cost to the seniors in the Town of Webster. It would involve uniformed firemen with a valid ID coming into your home and mounting the detectors in the correct locations. Anyone who feels that this program would be a benefit to them should contact the Fire Department Monday through Friday at 508-949- 3875 or a sign up sheet will be available at the local senior center on School Street. • Income Tax Preparation available through an AARP program.
