Foreword<br />
The United States <strong>Army</strong> formed the <strong>3rd</strong> <strong>Infantry</strong> <strong>Division</strong><br />
in November 1917 and eight short months later<br />
the <strong>Division</strong> answered the nation’s call to fight in<br />
World War I. There, while holding the banks of the Marne River<br />
in France, it earned its nickname “The Rock of the Marne.”<br />
In the 90 years that followed, Dog Faced Soldiers continued<br />
to answer the call in World War II, Korea, Kuwait, and the Balkans.<br />
In each conflict, Marne men and women earned magnificent<br />
reputations for valor, and 51 earned the Medal of Honor.<br />
Every day on the battlefield I tell the Soldiers they have a<br />
choice in life – they can make history or read history and the<br />
Soldiers of the <strong>3rd</strong> <strong>Infantry</strong> <strong>Division</strong> certainly made history<br />
during the <strong>Division</strong>’s third deployment in support of Operation<br />
Iraqi Freedom. Most of the <strong>Division</strong>, to include the Headquarters,<br />
deployed in support of “The Surge,” a bold initiative by<br />
