The <strong>3rd</strong> Combat Aviation<br />
Brigade Joins the Fight<br />
Setting up for Success<br />
The <strong>3rd</strong> Combat Aviation Brigade arrived in Kuwait in<br />
May and organized itself for the key role that it would<br />
play in the counterinsurgency fight ahead. The Brigade<br />
consisted of 1st Battalion, <strong>3rd</strong> Aviation Regiment; 2nd<br />
Battalion, <strong>3rd</strong> Aviation Regiment; 4th Battalion, <strong>3rd</strong> Aviation<br />
Regiment; and the 60<strong>3rd</strong> Aviation Support Battalion. The <strong>3rd</strong><br />
Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 10th Mountain <strong>Division</strong> was<br />
attached to the CAB in place of one of the brigade's two attack<br />
helicopter battalions.<br />
The division ordered its brigades to consolidate four unmanned<br />
aerial surveillance platoons into one company under<br />
the control of the <strong>3rd</strong> CAB. This gave the CAB a unique capability<br />
to use drones as spotters in advance of manned aircraft<br />
