130 years ago, began the construction of the Speicherstadt (warehouse
district). In the red brick buildings that today form a pleasant contrast to the
modern and futuristic glass buildings of the Hafen City, were once stored
Hamburg's most valuable commodities such as tea, coffee, spices, fine
cloths, oriental carpets, etc. At that time, the warehouse district was
"abroad". Custom borders were on all roads to this quarter; hence the trade
goods were not stored in Germany and therefore neither had be taxed nor
cleared. A big advantage for traders who this way saved much money and
established their wealth.
Today are located in the buildings of the warehouse district museums,
restaurants and bars, event venues and much more.
Among others, there are:
. The “Miniatur Wunderland Hamburg”, the largest miniature railroad in the
world. 930 model trains run on 13 kilometers rails in a 1,300 square foot
complex, where real landscapes and cities of Central Europe, Scandinavia
and the U.S. are shown. For example, the cities of Las Vegas and Miami,
as well as the Cape Canaveral Spaceport.
