Mocha Trumpet Band Presentation of a plaque to the Sloman family in recognition & memory of MTB Drum Major & Past President David Sloman “ Nothing Succeeds Like Success” (Dumas). A motto that is so very appropriate for the Mocha Trumpet Band. Under the very capable leadership of ‘09 President, Greg Jackson, the Band attained the budgeted target for the year 2009. The following were the beneficiaries: Mocha Shrine Centre: $4,000.00 Hospitals (including MSPOTS) $4,000.00 Scottish Rite Learning Centre $500.00 $3,500 donated to the Mexico City Shriners Hospital for Children, Transportation Fund on our behalf from the Mocha Motor Corps Shride Project. This donation was made possible by our band member, Randy Henry and his Motor Corps committee. You know it is always a challenge to surpass the success of previous years but fortune seems to shine on our unit. No doubt this is due to the dedication and terrific effort by our members and it’s a good bet that 2010 will again be a successful year under our new officers: President, Bruce Richards; Secretary, Dave Williamson; Treasurer, Don Gellatly; 1yr Member-At-Large, Jack Baskey and 2yr Member-At-Large, Ron Henry. After 2 years, John Lloyd handed over the Directorship to Stew Taylor. John will continue to support the band and assist Stew. Our band is very active but certainly not intimidating as quite often we turn some of these dates into functions with our wives, friends and family. Here are just some of the 18 events or parades we participated in: Playing at the JLC London Knights Shrine Evening (much of the credit for that money-raising project for MSPOTS goes to MTB member Stew Murdoch and his Committee). Also at the JLC, was the Installation Ceremony of the Daughters Of the Nile, Supreme Princess Royal. Playing at the Toronto Varsity Stadium along with the other excellent Mocha Unit, the Oriental Band and what a fun day that was. This year we didn’t have our annual Bar-B-Q but instead Stew and Diane Taylor invited the band to their beautiful home after the Lambeth parade and again this December, they also had an open house for their neighbors, friends and Shriners and that included us. Thanks again, Stew and Diane, everyone thoroughly enjoyed both of these occasions. You are both such gracious hosts! John Lloyd arranged an evening where we invited the Midlanders Band to join one of our practices to play and then had a jam session. John also arranged for the band to attend a practice with the Tomato Soup Band at the Dutch Canadian Club. In September, our band’s Masonic Director of Ceremonies, R W Bro. Jack Baskey again formed an MTB degree team from the many talented members, to confer the 2nd degree on Bro. Richard Lewis in Daylight Lodge No. 735. During the Christmas Season, we played in 5 Santa Claus Parades and in addition, at the London Meadow Park Nursing Home. All Shrine Jewelry is available from the Mocha Trumpet Band display cabinets situated in the entrance/coat room to the upper Banquet Hall and can be purchased at the Mocha Office (and of course, we also sell jewelry during ceremonials). Stew Murdoch along with his assistant, Don Gettatly, have run this concession for many years. Stew has now relinquished this position as Chairman and we the band members, along with the Mocha Divan, thank him for many hours devoted to this important position and for making jewelry available to all Shriners. Are you planning an outside function in the coming year and don’t want to take a chance on the weather? Our unit has easily-erected marquees available for a donation. February 2010 2/2/10 9:01 AM Page 15 What’s Happening in the Units! Mocha Trumpet Band cont’d recently been to Lake Chapala, Mexico vacationing with Graham and Sheila Paull. While they were there they made tentative plans for another Mocha Trumpet Band visit in late February 2012 on the occasion of Graham Paull being installed as Potentate of Anezeh Temple, Mexico. No doubt Owen will soon share information and plans about what Graham & Sheila have in mind. All those who went on the October 2005 successful trip will attest to the skill and ability of Sheila and Graham’s “vacation planning”. By the way, this will be open to all so if you wish to take advantage of what will be another fantastic visit to Mexico, call Owen at 519-654- 0117 as early as possible, please. There are many excellent units in Mocha offering various interests and all working for the same good cause. Maybe you would consider joining the Mocha Trumpet Band if you think you would like to play in a marching band. Just because you can’t play an instrument is not a problem – we’ll help you get over the fear and even teach you. Even if your only desire is to be a part of a fun and active unit, you can always carry a flag in our colour party, play a Glockenspiel or even become a cymbal player. Our colour party captain, Bob Shiell would love to have more company so give him a call at 519-672-4244. We have three pro’ cymbal Mocha Provost Corps How often have you been at the beginning of a Shrine Parade and notice the blue suits that “Tell You Where To Go!” Who are these Nobles and what is their job? Nobles of Mocha Shrine, “WE ARE THE MOCHA PROVOST CORPS!!” Our duties include organization, in conjunction with the Parade Marshall and Potentate, the Ceremonial Parades; the policing of Mocha Shrine Centre events as needed; assist as the Potentate's Ball; plus, we are available for other events that require “policing” The Provost Corps was established to act as “ The Police Unit” of Mocha Shrine and to work along with the Divan of Mocha. Our unit meets at the Mocha Shrine Centre on the 4th Monday in March, April, May, June, September, October and November. Our October meeting is our Annual Meeting where elections and installation takes place for the officers for ensuing year. In future editions of the Mocha News, we will look at the history of our unit and introduce you some of members. You might be surprised as to who is a member of the unit. players, Bill Frank, Bob Brady and Owen Coles whose skill and music ability is beyond question … just ask them! Remember becoming a Shriner is step #1 – Joining Mocha Trumpet band is step #2 – Traveling with a bunch of great guys and gals who have fun galore is step #3.
