UNIT NEWS
Legion of Honour
The Mocha Legion of Honour will again lead the way
at the Spring Ceremonial in Port Elgin. The members
of the colour party are continuously working on their
conditioning to be able to display the excellence that they
have exhibited in the past. The same illustrious group
will perform at the Potentate’s Ball.
The recent difficulties that resulted from the
Commander’s inability to complete his duties, have been
overcome, Past Commander Harold Phillips has taken
the reins and the unit is once again functioning well. The
2nd Lt. Commander’s position has been filled by the
election and installation of Past Great Lakes Commander
Keith Roden, to that position. The unit extends heartfelt
thanks to both these fine gentlemen for their dedication
and devotion to the unit.
I recently had the opportunity to attend the Shrine Bowl
football game in Orlando, Fl. Commander Mike Pittman
and Past Commander Tracy Coughlin of Bahia Legion of
Honour, met us at the Stadium and we were given passes
that allowed us to go anywhere anytime. We were
introduced to the Potentate, the LOH members and their
ladies and treated to a wonderful lunch. We met some of
the players and went on the field to practice the opening
ceremonies. (I have included a photo with Imperial Sir
George Mitchell, Mike Pittman (white shirt), ROTC
student with Canadian flag and myself with Canadian
flag (back to camera) during the opening ceremonies).
The ceremony included LOH from Florida, Georgia, the
Carolinas and Canada. The members of Bahia LOH
extend an invitation to all to come to their dinner/dance
meetings on the 3rd Fri. of most months at the Orlando
Shrine Centre, 2300 Pembrook Dr., Orlando, FL 32810.
They also invite all to attend next year and hope to fill
the field with LOH flags. The ROTC students held a flag
for each of the States, a large U.S. flag carried by 12
students and the U.S. Marines supplied a drill team. This
is an experience I will always remember.
A group of unit members accompanied the GLSA-LOH
Commander, our own, John (Popeye) Smith to the
International Assoc. Legion of Honour convention in
Branson, Missouri and all attest to having a wonderful
time. The photo attached photo was taken at the Necrology
Service (from the left are GLSA-LOH 2nd Lt Commander
Roy Combs, GLSA-LOH Commander John (Popeye)
Smith, GLSA-LOH 1st Lt Commander Ken Morey and
Phoenix, an eagle from Dickerson Park Zoo).
The annual Frankenmuth, Mich. trip is scheduled for
17-18/Jun/2011; contact any of the executive for details.
We will be in need of all of the finely tuned bodies we
can get for the circus on 23/Jun/2011 at Western Fair
Agriplex (2 shows). I hope you all have a wonderful
summer and are able to give me some interesting
material for the next edition.
If you are a Shriner or know a Shriner with military
experience, regular or reserve, we’ d be happy to meet
you and introduce you to a group of wonderful
comrades.
