GUIDE TO FACILITATORS This guide is prepared to enable facilitators to plan and execute the training programme on monitoring and evaluation for HIV/AIDS successfully. The guide is only meant to assist facilitator to effectively plan and run their training programmes; the guide is not exhaustive and is not intended to substitute the facilitator role in using his or her potential in creating a facilitative environment for the learning process. Attributes of a Facilitator in the Area of Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS Programmes The following suggestions are made to encourage and give confidence to persons developing and running a training programme in M&E of HIV/AIDS programmes. The value of any training programme is greatly dependent upon the effectiveness of the facilitator. This is especially true in the area of HIV/AIDS programmes. The facilitator is the crucial factor in the success of the training programme. Persons who facilitate an M&E training programme for HIV/AIDS programmes should possess the following attributes: • Positive attitude toward HIV/AIDS intervention programmes • Adequate factual knowledge of HIV/AIDS • Adequate understanding of M&E processes conceptually and pragmatically • Ability to communicate comfortably with adult and youth learners • Appropriate professional attitude • Ability to create a supportive attitude in the training room so participants (trainees) will be encouraged to ask questions and express feelings • Knowledge of community resources and practices so as to present diverse viewpoints or to provide current insights into selected topics • Desire to keep up to date in the field by attending workshops and conferences and being current with research findings in the area of facilitation • Must identify with the general norms of trainees and the general community • Genuine Respect • Must be interested in the subject area and individual learners • Has a sense of humour Page 67
