Is it aimed at knowledge-creation or skill-building • Is the method facilitative in creating a learning environment • Does the method promote learners’ involvement • Does the method sustain interest in learners • Does the method create mutuality of experience among participants • Am I competent at using the method • Modeling Evaluation of the Training Programme Every training programme should be evaluated to measure progress and success. Evaluation can be done prior to the commencement (pre-test) of the training programe, during the training programme, or post training programme. Pre-training evaluations are aimed at assessing the knowledge base of trainees prior to the commencement of the training programme so that the facilitator is positioned appropriately. Mid-session Evaluations (formative) are a corrective tool to enable the facilitator to reflect back on the training programme to determine whether he or she is achieving the intended results or not. For maximum advantage, each evaluation undertaken should be analyzed and feedback given. Thus the following types of evaluation may be used: • Pre-training test Page 70
• Post-training test • Day reflections • Daily evaluation forms • Overall evaluation forms. Basic steps in Planning a Training Programme • Decide on the subjects which will meet the needs • Choose the best form for the programme (workshop, seminar, conference, meeting, etc.) • Make a budget • Choose the venue commensurate your budget limits • Decide on the time-table (months, days of the week, hours) • Recruit facilitators • Recruit participants • Inform participants in good time • Find suitable methods and materials/requirements.
