B. Federal circuit court cases<br />
In citations <strong>of</strong> reported federal circuit cases, place the elements <strong>of</strong> the citation in<br />
the following order:<br />
• The name <strong>of</strong> the case, in italics, followed by a comma;<br />
• The citation (generally, F., F.2d, or F.3d);<br />
• The circuit number, written as 1st Cir., 2d Cir., etc., followed by the<br />
year <strong>of</strong> decision, with no intervening space, within parentheses (e.g.,<br />
10th Cir.2003).<br />
HOW TO CITE FEDERAL CIRCUIT COURT CASES—<br />
REPORTED CASES<br />
Bass v. Hoagland, 172 F.2d 205 (5th Cir.1949).<br />
Thorpe v. Thorpe, 364 F.2d 692 (D.C.Cir.1966).<br />
Schoenhaus v. Genesco, Inc., 440 F.3d 1354 (Fed.Cir.2006).<br />
In citations <strong>of</strong> federal circuit cases that are not reported, place the elements <strong>of</strong> the<br />
citation in the following order:<br />
• The name <strong>of</strong> the case, in italics, followed by a comma;<br />
• The circuit number, written as 1st Cir., 2d Cir., etc.;<br />
• The case number, written as No. ___;<br />
• An electronic-database citation, if available, preceded by a comma;<br />
• The date <strong>of</strong> decision (month, day, year).<br />
