In citations <strong>of</strong> federal district court cases that are not reported, place the elements<br />

<strong>of</strong> the citation in the following order:<br />

• The name <strong>of</strong> the case, in italics, followed by a comma;<br />

• The court <strong>of</strong> decision (district and state, but not division);<br />

• The case number, written as No. ___;<br />

• An electronic-database citation, if available, preceded by a comma;<br />

• The date <strong>of</strong> decision (month, day, year).<br />

1.5. Out-<strong>of</strong>-<strong>State</strong> <strong>Court</strong> Cases.<br />

A. Print published<br />

In citations <strong>of</strong> out-<strong>of</strong>-state court cases that are print published, place the elements<br />

<strong>of</strong> the citation in the following order:<br />

• The name <strong>of</strong> the case, in italics, followed by a comma;<br />

• The <strong>of</strong>ficial citation, if one is available;<br />

• The un<strong>of</strong>ficial citation, if one is available;<br />

• The year <strong>of</strong> decision, within parentheses, as follows:<br />

o If the case is <strong>of</strong>ficially reported, only the year will appear in the<br />

parentheses;<br />

o If the case has no <strong>of</strong>ficial reporter:<br />

• The name <strong>of</strong> the state (abbreviated or in full, as set forth<br />

in “D. Abbreviations for out-<strong>of</strong>-state reporters”<br />

below) appears before the year, if the case is from the<br />

state’s highest court;<br />

• The name <strong>of</strong> the state (abbreviated or in full, as set forth<br />

in “D. Abbreviations for out-<strong>of</strong>-state reporters”<br />

below) appears followed by the word “App.,” if the<br />

case is from an appellate court.<br />
