III. Given Changing conditions and visitor expectation, what actions must<br />
tourism purveyors of sustainable tourism take – keep doing, stop doing, do<br />
differently, start doing?<br />
Farming:<br />
• Diversify farm products that are year round and multi-product<br />
• Diversify tourist marketing, more than just the ocean state.<br />
• Create partnership between farmers, attractions, lodgings and marketing websites.<br />
• Get state agencies out of SILO. (Still using old models of Agriculture management &<br />
marketing.<br />
• Agritourism unites Agriculture, Economics, Landscape preservation, Health etc.<br />
• Need coordinators who need to market locally.<br />
• State not marketing <strong>Tourism</strong> – small Biz.<br />
• Promotion & collaboration is needed to keep $ in state.<br />
Transportation:<br />
• Connect greenways and bikeways<br />
• Build a world-class 21st century integrated transportation system for RI that will serve tourists<br />
as well<br />
• Do not tear up existing railroad tracks<br />
• More info. on bike-paths, greenways for tourists<br />
• Finish rail system projects<br />
• Light rail in Providence metro area<br />
• Boston/ MBTA<br />
• Aquidneck island – connect to Fall River<br />
• Designate bike routes and lanes, scenic highways, byways major tourist corridors<br />
• Promote bicycle tourism adventures/ entrepreneurs<br />
• Non-automotive infrastructure<br />
• Benefit<br />
• Stop proliferation of billboards and infrastructure clutter<br />
• Reduce automotive dependency<br />
• Continue to aggressively pursue rail transportation throughout RI<br />
