Building plans
The Learning Resources Centre building is now up to the roof and work is on
schedule. It is really good to see the space that we will have for next September.
Work on refurbishing rooms and laboratories in the N block starts on the 8th June.
There will be an additional laboratory and a new computer room partially funded
from the Science Second
Specialism. This is just
the start of a long and
complicated summer
works programme, with
new roofs for N block, the
hall and the kitchen,
starting in July and a new
languages area in the Old
Building. (Mrs Stratton)
Library Resources Centre Interior
When asked to help design the layout of the new LRC our students responded with
great enthusiasm and four working groups with students from Yr 7 to Yr 13 were
quickly formed. After much research and hard work they all produced amazing
power point presentations, packed full of original ideas for furniture, carpets and
colour schemes, which ranged from a tartan to an oriental theme.
Popular ideas were having a quiet reading area with sofa and bean bags, and having
wooden furniture both of which have been included in the final design. After many
meetings, much lively discussion, and visits by a number of library suppliers, the
contract was finally awarded to FG Library Products, whose beech Calypso shelving
was exactly what the students liked. (Mrs Wood)
A students view: Designing the new library was a lengthy process involving a range
of students across the years. Everyone was involved, offering creative ideas on
every subject from curvy sofas to tartan cushions, frequently meeting to discuss
ideas. We then presented our thoughts to the management team – who took them
forward and discussed them. As a result, the furniture, layout and colour scheme
have had a great deal of input from the entire student body, and it’s set to look
fantastic! (Laura Mason 11E)
At the end of the Easter holiday four
SWGS girls (Evie Gentle, Thea Maxwell,
Alice Nield and Melissa Morris) acted as
Wessex Walks – Save the Children
Once again Mrs Tallis, Miss Balaine and Miss
Rogers accompanied pupils who chose to walk
either 10 or 15 miles along Whitesheet Hill on
Sunday 10th May.
The weather this year was ideal – not too hot and
not the torrential rain we experienced a couple of
years ago!
All the girls completed their distances successfully
and all money raised in sponsorship will go direct
to Save the Children. (Mrs Tallis)
Teachers Masterchef
Well done to 9B who came up with a very
innovative idea for raising money: a
Teachers’ Masterchef competition. Eight
teachers took part in teams of 2 to
decorate a cake using materials provided.
Pupils paid to watch the fun and the
cakes produced (a treasure chest, a
Titanic scene, a crab and a castle) were
then auctioned off to the highest bidder.
The fantastic sum of just over £102 was
raised in one lunch hour! (Mrs Tallis)
Year 8 Charity Fair
On Friday 24 April 2009, the whole of Year 8 held the
annual South Wilts Charity Fair. Representatives from
16 local charities were invited to help the girls to
understand the work of their charity and to assist in
fund raising over the lunchtime period.
The girls set up their own stalls and displays and
raised money with games and raffles, as well as selling
home made cakes and crafts. Several teachers were
persuaded to be sponged outside! The hall was
buzzing with excitement as staff and girls from the rest
of the school wandered around the Fair enjoying the
activities. In all, over ₤584 was raised and a great deal
of fun was had by all. Many of the charity
representatives remained in school for lunch
afterwards and remarked on how impressed they were
with the girls’ enthusiasm and determination to make
the event such a success.
The charities involved were:
Hope and Homes for Children, Trussell Trust, Wiltshire
Wildlife Trust, Wiltshire Blind Association, Wiltshire
South Wilts Eco Team Spring Update
The Eco Team is continuing to work hard campaigning for improved
recycling facilities, better energy efficiency and heightened
environmental awareness at South Wilts and in the local community.
This term the Eco team has carried out a whole school survey to
establish an eco code for SWGS. The final code is the result of every
form’s suggestions. The themes of the code are:
R Conserving heat R Saving energy
R Conserving water R Saving resources
R Recycling R Transport
Not forgetting taking pride in our surroundings, respecting the wildlife around our site and
keeping the school clean and tidy by using the litter bins! This code will be prominently
displayed around the school site and will feature in the school planners from September 2009.
We are continuing our progress towards the Eco-Schools Green Flag Status. We currently hold
the Bronze Award. We are improving links with other Wiltshire schools with active eco groups
that have been successful in their bids for alternative energy sources and better recycling
facilities.
Generation Green
Parents, you can make a
difference too, visit the
“leaves”. We can trade the leaves for eco
friendly prizes, from gardening equipment to solar
panels. On the website you can complete an
energy evaluation of your own home, which will
benefit you because the report will show you how
energy efficient your home is, and it will benefit
the school because for every report you fill in, we
earn leaves. So visit today because we can’t do
it without you! (The Eco Team)
Sixth Form Writing Club
Writing club first met way back in September
2008, and since then we have written many
different forms of prose and poetry.
These have included: writing for competitions,
writing inspired by art and novels, writing to
music, play scripts, and having to include five
words in a piece (e.g. Hitler, deep, portal, rose
and plug). These were all challenging tasks, but
also enjoyable; they stretched our imaginations
and knowledge of literature and language.
Walk to School Week
We celebrated the national Walk to School
Week in May and we are encouraging
sustainable ways of travelling to school/
work and would like all families to consider
making positive changes. Wherever
possible we hope SWGS students and
their families will try to use public transport
or walk and cycle to school or work more
often. (The Eco Team)
Wessex Walks
I did the Wessex walk last year, so I knew
what to expect. However this year there
was one difference, I was doing 15 miles
instead of 10. As I arrived at the meeting
point, I realised what I had got myself in
for! The bus dropped us off at the start
point. It was the hardest and most uphill
part of the walk. We started walking and
when we had done 5 miles we sat down in
a field for some lunch. As I neared the end
my feet were extremely painful. I couldn’t
wait to get home and take my boots off!
All the pain was worth it, I raised money to
help Save the Children. Mrs Tallis did a
really good job organising the trip, and I
hope that I can do the walk next year.
Theatre trip - The Importance of Being Earnest
When the bell sounded for the start of break, we all raced down to the form room to get ready
to leave. Some people had already brought sweets, which were being eaten. We all assembled
in the small hall, took a register, and then walked to the Playhouse. Before we watched the
play itself, we listened to a short talk from some of the actors, and the stage managers. It was
interesting to learn about all of the work which goes into producing a play on stage. After that
we went into our own roped off area for lunch.
After we had eaten we went back to the main theatre, and took our seats, and settled down to
watch the play. It was very well made, and the actors did a good job of portraying the
characters. During the interval we had a drink and then went back in to watch the second half.
This part was much shorter than the first section, so we were soon standing up to leave.
I really enjoyed going to the theatre and it was a good first experience of a play performed live.
I also want to say thank you to the English department for organising the trip. (Katharine Child
It was a very informative and interesting event, with
demonstrations on using bubbles in architecture and
route planning, as well as a talk on some of the careers
possible with A level maths. This was followed by a
challenging 3 round quiz with teams from South Wilts
coming in second and third place, but we think all
participants would agree that the highlight of the day
was watching Ms Offner put inside a giant bubble!
German Exchange
In the first week of term, around 50 German students from the Maria Ward Schule, came to
England on an exchange involving Year 10 and Year 12 students.
During the week they went on many trips. They spent a day in London where they loved the
shops. They also visited
Stonehenge which they didn’t
enjoy as much because it
rained! They also visited Oxford
and Bath.
They learnt how to play
rounders and make scones.
The students spent an
enjoyable weekend with their
families and then on the last
night there was a barn dance
which was enjoyed by everyone
Visit from the Doric Quartet
In April Mr Parsons kindly arranged for the Doric
Quartet to coach four of our string quartets. The
quartet members gave very helpful advice and
encouragement so that everyone learnt a great deal
and benefitted enormously from the experience.
Parents and friends were then treated to excellent
performances from the girls before the Doric Quartet
played a varied and exciting programme themselves to
Guitar Concert
Mr Wilkinson organised his annual guitar concert in
May.
We all enjoyed listening to the accomplished playing
and singing from the Guitar Group in a very relaxed
and informal atmosphere where the enthusiasm of
those taking part communicated itself readily to the
audience.
All who took part did very well and there were some
impressive solo performances. In particular, Amy
Bromley, who leaves this term, excelled herself in
her final concert by playing and singing a great variety of material, giving very convincing and
expressive interpretations.
Jointly, we sang Handel’s joyful Zadok the Priest, Mozart’s serene Ave Verum Corpus and
Faure’s famous Requiem, with soloists Iona MacDonald singing the Pie Jesu and Julian
The Bishop’s Choir sang The Lamb by John Tavener, a selection of characteristically
we have been raising money through the selling of 'H4H'
merchandise and the always successful use of collecting tins!
Lots of hard work went into the production of the show, and it
was a great success.
The total amount raised is still being counted, and we are
nearing the £500 mark! Thanks to all who donated. (Miss
Ski Trip 2009
On Sunday the 5th of April a coach load of excited South Wilts girls set off from school, on their
way to Heathrow airport. After checking in at customs we discovered that the flight to Boston
was delayed so we had more time to wander around Duty Free. As soon as we arrived in
Boston and our hotel, we got into our beds and were all fast asleep.
The next day entailed shopping in Freeport, an outlet village filled with shops including
Tommy Hilfiger, Polo Ralph Lauren, and, of course, Abercrombie and Fitch. For the next five
days we were skiing. Eight mountains worth of snow to ski or snowboard down accompanied by
really nice instructors. We also did a few very fun activities in the evenings. There was a disco,
etiquette lessons with Mrs Holland, tenpin bowling and laser tag! We spent the final day of the
trip in Boston spending our last remaining dollars at Quincy's Market. Then we drove the final
few miles to the airport. The Boston to London flight went very smoothly and we were soon
back in England. The final leg of the journey was returning to South Wilts by coach.
The ski trip was great fun and everyone enjoyed it. I cannot wait to go again! (Heather Baker &
Ski Trip 2009
As the ski trip was fast approaching, the excitement among the students was growing and
before we knew it, we found ourselves in Heathrow airport, eager to board the plane. After a
long yet entertaining journey we arrived at the Grand Summit Hotel... 3 hours late! However
we were greeted with packed lunches and food always lightens the mood! A day of fantastic
shopping followed when we visited Freeport, and all students laden with bags got back on the
coach (just!) anticipating a week of exciting skiing and snowboarding.
The ski instructors were entertaining and brought the best out of all of us, everyone showing
off their individual skills by the end of the
week. An emotional award ceremony for all
skiers and snowboarders brought our week
to an end, and we had to say goodbye to the
fantastic food, snow and atmosphere. We
managed to fit in a quick visit to Quincy's
Market in Boston for some last minute
shopping, and then it was homebound to
dear old Salisbury! We give our thanks to all
the teachers, especially Miss Salen, without
whom, the trip would not have been
possible!
We will never forget our amazing holiday in
Maine, and we greatly recommend it to all
students. (Georgie Clark and Darcie Doyle)
Netball Challenge - SWGS v South Africa
On 25th March South Wilts had the pleasure of
welcoming a visiting netball team from Langenhoven
High School in South Africa to participate in a couple of
friendly matches. Both SWGS U16 and U18 teams took
on the visitors in what were hotly contested matches,
cheered on by a good crowd of supporters. The physical
efforts of the players were helped by the provision of
numerous homemade cakes and biscuits which certainly
went down well.
In the end the visitors, who put forward a very strong
side, managed to squeeze out a win but good fun was
had by all. The SWGS players also found it valuable to
compete against a team with a different playing style.
Thanks go to those who helped in organising the event,
and to those who kindly agreed to host players
overnight. (Charlie Corson 6JMA)
Internet Safety
Recent surveys have again shownup
some worrying statistics
concerning internet safety.
Most young people underestimate
the dangers on the web.
Most young people release far
more personal information than is
safe.
Many parents are unaware of what
their children have viewed or who
they have contacted while online.
Many young people feel that they
are in control of chat-room
conversations with strangers when
the reality is often quite different.
Help Needed with Mock Interviews for
University
Every autumn students in Year 13 are
offered a practice interview for Higher
Education and we rely heavily on
parents to help with this. Could you
spare a couple of hours in October. We
particularly need people with relevant
experience to interview students
applying for medical / veterinary courses,
law, engineering, psychology and social
science, but experience in any arts,
humanities or science subjects would be
very welcome too. If you think you could
help please contact Lorraine Voce by
letter, or e-mail her at
Stonar ISODE Sunday 2009
South Wilts Grammar School had a team and two
individuals competing on Sunday 17th May in the
Stonar School Inter-school One Day Event
(ISODE). All our girls did incredibly well despite the
wet weather.
In our team we had Lucy Pike, Rosanna Sykes,
Stephanie Sherborne and Alice Elgar. With
Stephanie also competing as an individual on a
different horse. The girls were cool, calm and well
behaved and so were their ponies. Stephanie
Sherborne was 7th in her section as an individual
on a young horse finishing on her dressage score of
33. An excellent result for one of their first
competitions together.
Lucy Pike was 4th in her section with a dressage
score of 33.5, one down in the SJ and clear XC to
finish on 37.5. Rosanna Sykes was just out of the
placings. She had a dressage score of 36.5, one
down in the SJ, clear XC with 8.4 time penalties to
finish on 48.9
Alice Elgar was 10th in her section with a score of
33.5 in the dressage, clear SJ and XC with just 2
time penalties to finish on 35.5 in a very hot section.
Stephanie Sherborne rode Nelson in the team and
had a score of 40.5 in the dressage, one down and
a time penalty in the SJ and a stop XC.
The team came 5th out of 32 teams! They all rode
superbly in all three phases and were a real credit
to the school. Well done to all the girls involved and
thank you to all the mums for their support with the
club and entries. (Miss Scaife and Mrs Holland)
