The International Office is the first point of contact for enquiries regarding<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s international activities. It is responsible for coordinating <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s<br />

international programs, and forformulating policy and guidelines on the conduct of<br />

these activities.<br />

The International Student Unit (lSU) provides a focal point for international students<br />

at <strong>Swinburne</strong>. ISU is responsible for international applications and admissions to<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s University, TAFE and ELiCOS courses. ISU is also responsible forthe<br />

welfare of international students during their studies, and provides a range of support<br />

services.AII prospective international students should contact ISU for information on<br />

studying at <strong>Swinburne</strong>. All applications by international students must be sent<br />

directly to ISU.<br />

Offshore Business <strong>Education</strong> Programs<br />

Since 1993 <strong>Swinburne</strong> University ofTechnology has conducted training programs in<br />

Vietnam through the Offshore Business <strong>Education</strong> Program (OBEP). Within this<br />

program specially designed graduate certificates in business have been developed in<br />

the fields of accounting, rnarketing, human resource management and business<br />

administration. In addition, specialised prograrns have been developed for in-house<br />

delivery for joint venture and foreign owned companies.<br />

Library<br />

Libraries on each of the three campuses provide learning and information resources<br />

and services in support of <strong>Swinburne</strong>'s teaching and research programs.<br />

The combined collections include over 200000 books, 3000 periodical titles, print and<br />

CD-ROM indexes and abstracts, and a large collection of audio and video tapes,<br />

slides, interactive videodiscs and computer software. All materials in the collections<br />

are available for use in the libraries, and most may be borrowed. Access to all<br />

collections is facilitated by an online catalogue and an inter-campus loan service. The<br />

range of resources available is extended through reciprocal borrowing arrangements<br />

with other Victorian university and TAFE libraries, and a number of networked access<br />

arrangements to electronic resources including Internet access.<br />

Library staff work closely with teaching staff to develop collections and resources<br />

and help students to make best use ofthem. Programs designed to develop students'<br />

information skills are an integral part of most courses. Individual assistance is<br />

provided at service desks on each campus during opening hours. A range of printed<br />

guides to library resources and services is also available.<br />

Summary of Library borrowing regulations and conditions of use<br />

Persons entitled to use the library<br />

Each campus library is available forthe use of all full-time and part-time students and<br />

staff of <strong>Swinburne</strong> University ofTechnologywho acceptthe library regulations. Members<br />

ofthe general public, including past students and staff, are welcome to read or use the<br />

facilities within the library provided thatthey also acceptthe regulations. They may also<br />

borrow from the library on payment of a membership fee to the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library<br />

Information Service orthe Alumni Association.<br />

The managers of campus libraries, or the senior staff member on the premises, may<br />

refuse entry to the library to any person not registered as a borrower.<br />

Full-time and part-time staff members of <strong>Swinburne</strong> UniversityofTechnology.<br />

Approved borrowers from other institutions with which <strong>Swinburne</strong> has reciprocal<br />

borrowing agreements.<br />

Registered members of the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Library Information Service and Alumni<br />

Association.<br />

Such other persons or organisations as the University Librarian or Campus Librarian<br />

may from time to time approve as borrowers.<br />

Photocopying<br />

Photocopying machines are available in the library. Users must note the relevant<br />

provisions of the Copyright Act and abide by them.<br />

Borrowing<br />

All material and equipment borrowed must be recorded at appropriate issue points<br />

before the patron enters the security gate to leave the library. The borrower accepts<br />

responsibilityforthe care of any item borrowed and for its return in good condition<br />

on or before the due date and time. The library reserves the right to recall any item on<br />

loan before the expiration ofthe normal loan period.<br />

Most library materials may be returned to any ofthe campus libraries. Equipment<br />

must be returned to the campus from which itwas borrowed.<br />

Identity cards<br />

A current <strong>Swinburne</strong> identity card must be presented each time an item is borrowed,<br />

otherwise service will be refused. Cards are not transferable and lost identity cards<br />

must be reported and replaced irnmediately.<br />

Borrowing periods<br />

Students: the normal loan period for books is a fortnight. This period may be extended<br />

provided that the item has not been reserved by another user and that it is not<br />

overdue.<br />

Staff: the normal loan period for staff members and higher degree students for books<br />

is four weeks. This period may be extended provided that the item has not been<br />

reserved by another user and that it is not overdue.<br />
