44 I Undergraduate I General Student Information<br />

Students who complete these stages successfully are able to transferto <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

with full credit There is provision for students who commence their engineering<br />

studies at Bendigo to undertake the two six-month industrial experience components<br />

oftheir program in Bendigo.<br />

Engineering mentor scheme<br />

Each first-year undergraduate Engineering student is allocated to a particular member<br />

of staff who is known as the student's mentor. These mentors are responsible for<br />

guidance on student difficulties, programs, exemptions and re-enrolments.<br />

Enrolment<br />

Definitions of Enrolment terms<br />

In this section:<br />

Enrolmentincludes're-enrolment'.<br />

Enrolment form includes 're-enrolmentform'.<br />

Subjectmeans any area of study which is part of a course leading to an award and<br />

which has a title and code number in the subject register maintained by the<br />

University; the singular includes the plural.<br />

Awarding School means the School or, where courses are organised on a divisional<br />

basis, the division responsible forthe particular course; 'head of awarding division'<br />

has a similar meaning and includes the Divisional DeputyVice-Chancelior of the<br />

division where appropriate and the nominee olthe head ofthe awarding department<br />

or Divisional Deputy Vite-Chancellor.<br />

Deferred entry means an intending first-year student defers enrolmentfor up to one year<br />

on receipt of an offer of a place. Deferment is not automatic for some science and<br />

engineering courses.<br />

Leave of absence means the suspension of enrolment during a course for a specified<br />

period atthe discretion olthe appropriate divisional board on the basis that the<br />

enrolment will be resumed atthe end ofthe period.<br />

Amendment to enrolmentmeans the addition, deletion or changing of subject<br />

enrolments in a student's course of study.<br />

Abandonmentmeans discontinuation of enrolment without formal notification.<br />

Abandon has a similar meaning, unless the contrary intention is expressed.<br />

Although the <strong>Swinburne</strong> calendar is divided into two teaching semesters, students<br />

need enrol only once forthe subjects they are undertaking in anyone year. Where it<br />

is necessary to change the list of subjects entered for at enrolment a student must<br />

complete an Amendment to Enrolmentform available from Student Administration,<br />

the divisional office or school offices. Students should note thatthey must obtain<br />

the approval olthe head of their awarding school before amending their enrolment<br />

Applicants offered a place in any course in the Division will be expected to attend for<br />

enrolment in February. Successful applicants will be notified of enrolmenttimes<br />

when they are offered a place.<br />

Conditions of enrolment<br />

Enrolmentat <strong>Swinburne</strong> University ofTechnology is conditional upon:<br />

• the information which is supplied by the applicantto the University, upon which<br />

an offer of a place in a course is based, being accurate and complete;<br />

• the approval of the head ofthe awarding school (or his/her nominee) ofthe<br />

subjects concerned;<br />

the completion ofthe requisite enrolment and statistical information forms<br />

required by the University;<br />

• the undertaking of the studentto abide by the statutes, regulations, policies and<br />

procedures and standards of conduct of <strong>Swinburne</strong> University ofTechnology;<br />

• the payment of any prescribed general service fee;<br />

• the lodging of a Payment Options form in regard to the <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong><br />

Contribution Scheme (HECS) and, if appropriate, making an 'up front' payment<br />

Deferred entry<br />

Students who are offered a place in a first year undergraduate program for <strong>1998</strong> may<br />

apply for a deferment until 1999. Applications must be addressed to the School<br />

Administration Manager, and must be made atthe time an offer is received.<br />

Deferment is notautomatic.<br />

Students who have been granted deferment will be informed in writing.<br />

The Deferment Procedures policy can be found in the separate publication Policies and<br />

Procedures.<br />

Single subject enrolments<br />

Under the conditions set out below, it is possible to study single subjects offered by<br />

the University without enrolling in a full degree or diploma course.<br />

The minimum fee per semesterfor single subject (non-credit) enrolments in <strong>1998</strong> will<br />

be atthe rate per weekly contact hour as set by the individual school, plus the<br />

appropriate general service fee.<br />

The offering of places in single subjects is at the discretion ofthe School concerned<br />

and can be done only afterfull credit students have been accommodated. Therefore<br />

offers may be as late as the first week of teaching.<br />

An application form is available from the Division or School Office concerned orthe<br />

Admissions Officer.<br />

Entrance requirements<br />

The general criterion for consideration for entry to a <strong>Swinburne</strong> course is<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong>'s assessment of an applicant's ability to complete a chosen course.<br />

1. To satisfy the general entrance requirements and to be considered for admission<br />

to the first year of a degree or diploma course a student must have<br />

satisfactorily completed the VCE including the satisfactory completion ofthe<br />

work requirements in Units 3 and 4 of English.<br />

Any person offered a place at <strong>Swinburne</strong> may be required to present for a<br />

proficiency test in the English language. Applicants found to be below the<br />

necessary standard in this test may be required to undertake a remedial English<br />

course concurrently with their undergraduate course or may have their<br />

provisional offer of a place withdrawn.<br />

2. In addition to meeting the general requirements above, applicants must also<br />

satisfy any prerequisite or special requirements specified by the <strong>Higher</strong><br />

<strong>Education</strong> Division and listed in the <strong>Swinburne</strong> <strong>Handbook</strong>.<br />

3. The <strong>Higher</strong> <strong>Education</strong> Division may specify criteria for special entry schemes,<br />

covering applicants who may not hold the necessary formal entry qualifications<br />

but who, in the course selection officer's view, have the motivation and<br />

potential to successfully complete the course concerned.<br />

Other qualifications<br />

Applicants must have a qualification deemed to be the equivalent ofVCE by the<br />

Victorian Board of Studies. Such qualifications may include interstate and overseas<br />

qualifications and associate diploma studies at a TAFE institution unless entering<br />

through a special entry scheme.<br />

Alternative Category Entry<br />

The <strong>Swinburne</strong> Alternative Category Entry program enables applicants with no VCE<br />

or equivalent qualification to be considered for acceptance into undergraduate<br />

courses.<br />

The categories are:<br />

Age and <strong>Education</strong><br />

There are no age restrictions. This category is for applicants with no VCE or<br />

equivalent Selection is based on the personal history provided with the application<br />

for all courses except Business, which requires applicantsto sitthe Special<br />

Admissions Test administered by VTAC forthe Australian Council for <strong>Education</strong>al<br />

Research.<br />

Continuing Difficulties During Schooling, Applicants with<br />

Disabilities & Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders<br />

Applicants in these categories may provide additional information with their<br />

application form and contact the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Equity Unit for further assistance.<br />

Applicants who have passed VCE may also provide additional information with their<br />

applications.<br />

In all cases, applicants for courses offered by Engineering and Science<br />

must have passed the course prerequisites.<br />

Fees<br />

General service fee<br />

The General Service Fee is applied to the provision of amenities and services by the<br />

University. It does not confer membership of the <strong>Swinburne</strong> Student Union or any<br />

other student organisation.<br />

All enrolling students are required to pay a general service fee. The fees for <strong>1998</strong> are:<br />
