organises and presents the social programs for the year. A wide variety of events are<br />

planned, to suitthe different types of students, including theatre, parttimer's<br />

evenings and union nights. Students helpto organise activities through the Activities<br />

Management Committee and welcome feedback regarding the types offunctions<br />

students would like to experience on campus. VPA works closely with clubs and<br />

societies in order to promote activities jointly between clubs and the Student Union.<br />

The VPA office is located on Level 4 ofthe Union Building, Hawthorn campus.<br />

Clubs and Societies<br />

Clubs and Societies promote the involvement of students in the <strong>Swinburne</strong><br />

community through participation in groups with a common interest. Affiliated clubs<br />

receive funding from the Student Union and assistance with organizing events which<br />

suittheir members. There are more than sixty clubs and societies for students at<br />

<strong>Swinburne</strong> to choose from and the ability to start more. High quality meeting and<br />

storage facilities are available to be booked atthe Hawthorn SAASC, the Prahran<br />

Union Services Desk, and the Lilydale Union Services Desk. A mini bus is available<br />

for clubs and societies to book via the Tool Library, with no charge except for a<br />

deposit, refundable upon return of an undamaged bus. The Clubs and Societies<br />

officers will assist with queries regarding the starting of clubs, affiliation and<br />

support with resources.<br />

Orientation<br />

All new student are invited to attend the orientation program, which attempts to fast<br />

track the learning process about what is available on campus and what sort ofthings<br />

happen in a University environment. All the service departments of the University<br />

are involved in presenting information and theatre performances and workshops are<br />

held to target specific groups of students with special needs. Orientation days are<br />

offered for full-time students, before classes start and there are evening functions<br />

for part-time students. After the commencement of classes there is a week of<br />

orientation activities, which are entertainment based, to help new students getto<br />

know each other better.<br />

Tool library<br />

The Tool Library is located in the Contact Building at Hawthorn, however this service<br />

may also be accessed by students from the Lilydale and Prahran campuses. The<br />

Library hires a wide range of tools and equipmentto students and staff. Hire prices<br />

are extremely low and the service aims to enable access to equipment, without<br />

making a profit, while offering a quality service with information and assistance.<br />

Catalogues are widely available and equipment for hire includes lawn-mowers,<br />

mulchers, whipper-snippers, engine tun-up kit, arc welder, wallpaper remover, carpet<br />

steamer - and a whole lot more.<br />

Night Bus<br />

To ensure safety after dark, a night bus service is offered by the union in conjunction<br />

with the university, on all three campuses. At Hawthorn, students can take the bus<br />

from outside the Corner Caf in Wakefield Street, at Prahran from outside the<br />

Security Hut in St John Street, and at Lilydale from the Atrium Bus Stop. Drivers are<br />

selected and trained to be safety conscious and to offer a quality service, which<br />

drops students at their cars or transport stops within the local area. The service runs<br />

Hawthorn: Monday -Thursday 6.30pm -1 0.15pm<br />

Lilydale: Monday -Thursday 6.00pm - 9.00pm<br />

Prahran: Monday -Thursday 6.30pm -1 O.OOpm<br />

Photocopying<br />

The Student Union operates photocopying services from the Services Desk, Corner<br />

Cafeteria Hawthorn, Level 2 Building PK, Prahran, and Levell Building LA, Lilydale.<br />

Copying on transparencies for overheads is also available at a very reasonable price,<br />

and there are staff present to give assistance.<br />

A copytext card machine with a choice of $2.00 and $5.00 cards is available forthe<br />

use of Student Union photocopiers.<br />

Courtyard Cafeteria<br />

Located on the ground floor of the Union Building, this popular new cafeteria offers a<br />

wide variety of fresh sandwiches, focaccias, salads and fried foods. The cafeteria<br />

offers an Asian style of dining and is perfect for the student on a budget. Smokers<br />

are catered for in the undercover seating area and the environment is clean and<br />

inviting. Seats forty-eight inside and thirty-six outside.<br />

Ethel Cat<br />

The Ethel Caf is the largest cafeteria on campus, located on the third floor of the<br />

Union Building adjacentto the Greenhouse Bar/Bistro. The Amusement Centre,<br />

offering pool tables, video games and pinball machines, is situated here and the food<br />

servery offering a range offast foods opens daily between 1 O.OOam and 3.00pm to<br />

service players. This caf offers a large space for student clubs to run special<br />

activities and seats about 250 people.<br />

Greenhouse BarlBistro<br />

The Greenhouse is the place to be seen on campus. Enjoy a wine or beer with your<br />

meal, or relax with friends over a delicious cappuccino and cake. The Greenhouse is<br />

located on the third floor ofthe Union BUilding. The bar offers Victorian and boutique<br />

bottled beers, a large selection of spirits and cocktails and wines from the Yarra<br />

Valley. For diners who like to eat and drink in the fresh air, the outdoor terrace offers<br />

a garden retreat. Our Student Union Functions Department caters forweddings,<br />

twenty-firsts and other social events in the Greenhouse for both students and staff<br />

at competitive prices.<br />

CornerCaf<br />

Located on the corner of John and Wakefield streets, this extremely popular cafeteria<br />

provides an upmarket range of salads, gourmet sandwiches and snacks at a<br />

reasonable price. The Corner Caf has a clean and pleasant environment and is<br />

convenient to both University and TAFE students and staff.<br />

Functions Department<br />

If you are having a wedding, 21 st, graduation party or maybe just a meeting, this<br />

department can offer clubs, students and staff a wide range of catering from buffets<br />

and sit-down meals, to light luncheons, afternoon teas, cocktail parties and BBQs.<br />

The Functions Supervisor can advise you on menus and quantities. Please remember<br />

we do need two working days notice for refreshments and five working days for<br />

larger functions.<br />

Catering - Lilydale<br />

The Student Union also provides limited catering facilities at Lilydale.These can be<br />

found at the kiosk on the ground floor, set back from the Atrium next to the Student<br />

Union Services Desk. We offer a small range of hot and cold food, such as<br />

sandwiches, cakes, pies and snacks.<br />

service to clubs and internal departments.<br />
