The NRCS addresses HIV prevention and Reproductive Health through the adapted use of BCC as a multi-level tool for introducing and sustaining riskreducing behaviour change. This involves the promotion and reinforcement of tailored messages through a variety of communication channels. In Nepal as a first step towards behaviour change the general level of awareness on issues related to HIV has considerably increased. What is needed further is to reinforce the message and address beliefs and practices that lead to behaviour change. This includes stimulating discussion around cultural beliefs and practices; facilitating the life skills needed to reduce vulnerability and improving access to youth friendly services. It further implies reaching out to population groups with less access to information and reinforcing an information cascade among teachers, peer educators, their parents and peers followed by the community at large. This capitalization study presents the activities, outcomes and lessons learnt of the SDC funded programme on HIV and AIDS Prevention and Reproductive Health, implemented from 2000 until 2007 in the districts of Dolakha, Ramechhap, Sindhuli, Bhaktapur, Baglung and Parbat. The study highlights the main common features of different initiatives in the six districts, presenting them as the main pillars of the NRCS approach to SRH with a focus on youth at schools. Life skills development of Youth Project activities Almost all of the Peer Educators (PE) that are trained in the frame of this project are part of Junior/Youth Red Cross Circles (J/YRCC), also called the "youth wing" of the NRCS. The J/YRCCs are widespread groups of youth volunteers; almost every school in Nepal is hosting one or more circles. Throughout Nepal there are over 4,020 school youth circles with more than 800,000 members. Each circle is tended by a teacher - who is also a NRCS volunteer - as a first reference and supporting contact.
