Signed Parent: Signed Teacher: 23rd Sunday of Ordinary Time September 8, 2013 CUT HERE Luke 14:25-33 Now large crowds were traveling with him; Jesus said to them, “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not first sit down and estimate the cost, to see whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it will begin to ridicule him, saying, This fellow began to build and was not able to finish. Or what king, going out to wage war against another king, will not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to oppose the one who comes against him with twenty thousand? If he cannot, then, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for the terms of peace. So therefore, none of you can become my disciple if you do not give up all your possessions.” Reflection The language of Jesus’ time used stark contrasts when comparing things: to ‘love’ one thing meant to ‘hate’ the other, where we would say that one is more important than the other. Many families of the early Christians would have been against their children following Jesus, wanting them to stick with the old ways. Jesus needed to test the commitment of the ‘large crowds’: he was gaining a celebrity status. He needed to explain that being a Christian is not easy: God comes first. He didn’t want ‘fair-weather fans’, because he knew about the trouble ahead. Has your faith in Jesus ever been tested? How? And how did you respond? Prayer Jesus, you endured so much for us, you were crucified so that we might be redeemed. Give us the strength to endure suffering, to hold firm in our faith when we are tested. Help me let go of those worldly things that matter not, and carry your cross with you. Amen. september 2013
