“The amount of kit against investment<br />

was a key persuader, along with the<br />

choice of colours available on the<br />

strength equipment,” says Neil Whatling,<br />

operations manager for Amazon <strong>Leisure</strong>.<br />

“We weren’t the cheapest supplier, but<br />

the quality we were able to deliver for<br />

the investment led Studio2 to choose<br />

us as the best option.”<br />

Every piece of kit, from the treadmills<br />

right down to the Concept2 rowers,<br />

are fully refurbished units – all supplied,<br />

delivered and installed by Amazon to<br />

ensure a complete solution that met the<br />

customer’s specifi c requirements.<br />

The only new pieces of equipment<br />

onsite are the dumbbells, as according to<br />

Whatling: “It’s a devil gluing the rubber<br />

surround back on!”<br />

Whatling says strength machines are<br />

more straightforward when it comes to<br />

the remanufacturing process. “They’re<br />

far more mechanical than CV kit,” he<br />

says. “When you take away the electrical<br />

side of things, you can make very old<br />

equipment look as good as new.”<br />

Across the board, Studio2 saved<br />

around 65 per cent of the cost of new<br />

equipment. Says Sarah Bernard, owner<br />

of Studio2: “Our refurbished equipment<br />

is better than that of most gyms in<br />

Majorca and the team at Amazon were<br />

extremely patient with me.”<br />

ServiceSport to re-upholster its<br />

T Technogym strength equipment<br />

on-site in November 2009.<br />

Kevin Dobson, senior gym instructor<br />

at the club, says: “There was nothing<br />

wrong with our actual kit, but the<br />

padding was dented and the leather<br />

had started to split. The ServiceSport<br />

engineer arrived with his iron and his<br />

sewing machine and, by the time he left,<br />

the equipment looked brand new!”<br />

ServiceSport supplies second-hand<br />

Life Fitness CV equipment but, rather<br />

than stocking strength equipment for<br />

resale, it offers an ‘onsite’ refurbishment<br />

service. “Resistance kit takes up a lot<br />

of fl oor space in our warehouse,” says<br />

managing director Rick Fowler.<br />

“Instead, we refurbish existing<br />

equipment onsite. We can change the<br />

colour of the upholstery and replace the<br />

cables so that members think the club<br />

has completely replaced the resistance<br />

circuit with new machines.”<br />

Dobson continues: “We can’t put a<br />

price on what the service saved us – if<br />

members think machines are tatty,<br />

they’re more likely to go elsewhere.<br />

“Each piece took less than an hour to<br />

re-upholster and there was only ever<br />

one machine out of service at a time.”<br />
