Corporate responsibility Corporate responsibility can be defined as the management of a company’s positive impact on society and the environment through its operations, products or services and through its interaction with key stakeholders such as employees, customers, investors, communities and suppliers. We’re committed to achieving excellence in this area, and recognise our current and future responsibilities. In 2007, we again participated in the Corporate Responsibility Index (CRI) program conducted by the St James Ethics Centre and its partners. The CRI is a proven business tool and assists us to identify non-financial risk, as well as develop and improve corporate responsibility in line with our business strategy. Other benefits it provides include a framework for integrating corporate responsibility, a systematic and transparent approach to reporting, gap analysis for management, and increased trust in the organisation. Employees who are faced with ethical issues can also use the Ethi-Call service available from the St James Ethics Centre. This provides specialist support while protecting the anonymity of the caller. Our focus on improvement in this area was recognised with the Best Progress Award in the 2007 CRI, building on the Best Newcomer Award achieved in 2006. We remain dedicated to even better performance in the future and making corporate responsibility a key part of the way we do business. Recruiting apprentices across the state In 2007–08, Country Energy created 117 apprenticeship positions with recruits coming from every region in the state. We have a commitment and a presence in the communities we service through our decentralised regional management structure. This makes us one of Australia’s strongest regional businesses as well as being responsive to local priorities. Surely growing our own has to be a better way.” AN ENVIRONMENTAL LEADER As a responsible corporate citizen, we have an obligation to minimise the environmental impact of our operations. Our aim is to integrate environmentally sustainable management into everything we do by: environmental impacts arising from our activities, products and services standards, codes and licences which relate to our environmental aspects trained and have the knowledge and skills they need to undertake their work in an environmentally responsible manner environment policies, procedures and other requirements about environmental issues implementing preventative actions our significant environmental aspects to continually review and improve our environmental performance sources to address the impacts of electricity generation. Year in review This year, we took a first step in understanding our total carbon footprint through a major audit of our greenhouse gas emissions. The results will provide a base line for how we address carbon reduction across our operations in the future. The Environmental Management System (EMS) we use to manage our operational impacts was also audited and certification to AS/NZS ISO 14001 was maintained. This Standard is a driver for environmental improvement in all areas, including air emissions and carbon reduction. We achieved an environmental compliance rate of 96.8 per cent, measured through a record number of environmental audits conducted across all areas of the business during 2007–08. We also took a first step towards making our network operations more environmentally sustainable, commencing planning and construction of an ‘intelligent’ electricity network. Through this project, digital technology could give Country Energy real-time information on the status of our network and the energy flows on it. It could also provide our customers up-to-date information on their energy consumption habits online, enabling them to tailor their usage to the times of day when energy is cheaper.
