INTELLIGENT NETWORK To meet our strategic goals, we have to be both innovative and forward thinking and our operations need to be environmentally sustainable. Country Energy’s network strategies are designed to provide customers with a reliable and efficient supply of energy. But we also know that, to meet our strategic goals, we have to be both innovative and forward thinking and our operations need to be environmentally sustainable. That’s why we’re planning and building the next stage in the evolution of electricity supply. It’s called the Intelligent Network. The Intelligent Network is our long-term vision for what the electricity network is going to become – effectively bringing the electrical network into the digital age. This technology will make information available on the minuteby-minute behaviour of the network and the energy flows on it. Apart from being able to better monitor power usage and distribution all along the system, from powerlines to substations, the Intelligent Network will record energy usage information in the family home. Our customers will be provided with up-to-date information on their energy consumption habits online, allowing them to tailor their consumption to the times of day when energy is cheaper. Being able to observe and control their energy consumption can also help them do their bit towards combating climate change. The Intelligent Network will also help us manage our network better and deliver increasing reliability. Intelligent sensors and equipment will enable us to decide on the best course of action to respond to network outages and act quickly to fix the fault. In some cases, the network will be able to selfrepair, minimising the number of customers affected by a fault. We’ll also be able to read electricity meters remotely. The introduction of intelligent automation like this is yet another way we plan to meet our commitment to improve reliability, by transforming the performance of our network and finding better ways to deliver essential services to our customers. Making it happen Country Energy has already trialled smart metering technology that allows customers to decide when and how much energy they use. We’ve also researched more efficient use of energy in the home, conducted trials of remote monitoring of the energy supply network and looked into the potential of broadband internet over powerlines. With this first-hand experience, Country Energy is ideally placed to seek out partnerships with leading edge technology and energy companies and make the Intelligent Network a reality. Country Energy is the first Australian energy company to join the Global Intelligent Utility Network Coalition, a group of companies working together with IBM to develop the Intelligent Network. The Coalition will comprise energy suppliers from around the globe representing more than 20 million customers. The Coalition will be able to share resources and expertise, advancing the development of the Intelligent Network, while establishing a set of global standards, processes and regulatory approaches. Showing what’s possible Country Energy, in partnership with IBM, has completed the construction of an Intelligent Network Research and Education Centre in Queanbeyan. Its aim is to demonstrate what’s possible with a network that offers communication between domestic homes and our control rooms. The Centre shows how domestic appliances, such as air conditioners or pool pumps, could be switched on and off remotely, allowing customers to decide their level of energy consumption. We also show how customers who are moving house from one part of the network to another could simply instruct the network when to shut off the electricity to their old address and switch it on at their new home, right down to the minute and hour of the day. Another demonstration illustrates how the Intelligent Network could respond to an outage caused by a lightning strike through the use of smart equipment and sensors designed to respond and help return supply to normal, all without human intervention. Perhaps more importantly, the Centre is also a research facility that lets us discover how new technologies will work in a controlled environment before we take them out into the field. The Centre allows Country Energy to demonstrate the future benefits of the Intelligent Network and is open to visits by customers, regulators, policy makers, environmental groups and industry.
