The follow<strong>in</strong>g Policy Brochures were published <strong>in</strong> summer 2006:<br />

River <strong>in</strong>formation services – as policy implementation flows from research<br />

The “Harmonised River Information Services (RIS) on Inland Waterways <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Community” Directive 2005/44/EC is an important policy document<br />

for establish<strong>in</strong>g pan-<strong>European</strong> RIS. This booklet describes <strong>the</strong> RIS and<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir developments <strong>in</strong> Europe. The contributions of research activities<br />

to <strong>European</strong> transport policies are illustrated by <strong>the</strong> best-practice<br />

example of RIS development. The values of EU research programmes are<br />

demonstrated through <strong>the</strong>ir support <strong>in</strong> formulat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> development of<br />

transport policy, and <strong>in</strong> assist<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> implementation of that policy.<br />

The SESAR <strong>in</strong>itiative – research paves <strong>the</strong> way for <strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>European</strong> Sky<br />

SESAR, <strong>the</strong> S<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>European</strong> Sky implementation programme jo<strong>in</strong>tly<br />

funded by <strong>the</strong> <strong>European</strong> Commission and Eurocontrol through <strong>the</strong> TEN-T<br />

scheme, is <strong>the</strong> unique opportunity to make <strong>the</strong> vision of a S<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>European</strong><br />

Sky <strong>in</strong> air transport become a reality by <strong>the</strong> year 2020. One of its def<strong>in</strong>ition<br />

phase milestones was to devise an Air Traffic Management master plan<br />

by early 2008, def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g common goals and required developments<br />

of <strong>European</strong> air traffic control <strong>in</strong>frastructures. This brochure highlights<br />

SESAR’s scope and its impact on <strong>the</strong> overall S<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>European</strong> Sky scheme<br />

by look<strong>in</strong>g at recent research, live trials, studies and advances <strong>in</strong> technical<br />

equipment, as well as its legislative and organisational framework.<br />

TRANSPORT RESEARCH IN THE EUROPEAN RESEARCH AREA<br />

Maritime transport not only acts as <strong>the</strong> backbone of <strong>in</strong>ternational trade, it<br />

also offers great potential for <strong>in</strong>tra-community commercial exchanges. The<br />

EU now has a policy goal of achiev<strong>in</strong>g a clean, safe and efficient transport<br />

system, through <strong>the</strong> development of ‘motorways of <strong>the</strong> sea’, a concept of<br />

transform<strong>in</strong>g short sea shipp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to a real alternative to congested roads.<br />

This brochure aims to show <strong>the</strong> contribution of <strong>European</strong> research to <strong>the</strong><br />

policy goal. Beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with explanations of <strong>the</strong> concept and its system of<br />

logistics, <strong>the</strong> brochure <strong>in</strong>troduces research activities and f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs on <strong>the</strong><br />

socio-economic impact, market and f<strong>in</strong>ancial strategies, operational and<br />

organisational optimisation, application of new technologies, effective<br />

port/term<strong>in</strong>al operations and maritime safety. Conclusions highlight <strong>the</strong><br />

latest achievements of motorways of <strong>the</strong> sea and call for decision makers<br />

to support its development.
