VANCOUVER
fAr. and Mrs. Herb Stevenson, who operate
theatres at Prince George and at
Revelstoke, stopped off on the way back
home after a vacation cruise in the South
Seas. Stevenson is building a drive-in at
Revelstoke. which will make his lineup
three theatres and two airers. Herb said
patronage at Revelstoke was away off because
of a drop in lumber operations.
Ivan Ackery reported 2.400 attended an
invitational screening of "PoUyanna" at
the Orpheum ... In town from Toronto
headquarters were Lloyd Pearson of General
Sound & Theatre Equipment Co., and

Dave Fairleigh of Dominion Theatre
Equipment Co. has installed new sound and
projection in the Li-An Drive-In at Valemount,
which is operated by Messrs. Langford
and Magee, newcomers to the business.
Valemount is 35 miles from Jasper
National Park . Steel of the Rio
Theatre at Burns Lake in northern British
Columbia has installed a 16mm Hortsonarc
sound projector with an 80-amp. alternating
current arc lamp.
The Board of Broadcast Governors approved
an application by CKPG to erect
a television station at Prince George, using
Howard Fletcher, operator
channel 3 . . .
of the Cedar V Theatre at Lynn Valley
across the inlet from here, left on a trip
in Europe. He recently gave up the lease
on the suburban Kingcrest to S. Chizen.
The Dreamland Theatre in Birch Hills,
Sask., a 250-seater operated six days a
week by Fred Lypchuk, was severely damaged
by fire. The town's only theatre, it
may not be rebuilt . . . Steve Capowski and
wife have acquired the 16mm, 300-seat
Toby, the only theatre in Invermere, from
Mrs. Morgan and Morley Hogan.
The §4,000,000 motion picture studio and
recreation center planned by Oldi-ich
Panorama Productions, Ltd., in West Vancouver
is a step nearer. One of the three
groups of ratepayers in the area who must
approve the project voted favorably at a
recent election.
WINNIPEG
Dollyanna" was screened at the Capitol
for a selected audience of over 1,000,
including provincial and civic leaders,
school trustees and other educational officials,
and radio and trade personnel. Manager
Ed Newman had the theatre decorated
with beautiful floral displays for the occasion.
Doug Rosen spent six days here while
on the way back to Toronto from a trip
to Vancouver, Calgary and other western
cities . . . Hatton Taylor was in town
recently . . . Richard Miles announced the
completion of plans for the new Airliner
motor hotel with construction to commence
early in July. This project, on Airport
Drive-In theatre property, will not interfere
with the drive-in operation.
The 15th annual motion picture employes
picnic will be held on July 17 at
Rotary Lake in Selkirk Park. Races, games.
pony rides and many treats for the kiddies
will provide a day of fun and frolic for
industry employes and their families. Sam
Swartz reports that arrangements have
been completed for 100 underprivileged
children to share in the fun as guests of
the industry. Free bus service to the picnic
grounds will be provided from the Grand
Theatre at 11 a.m. There will be a special
award for the largest family present. All
industry employes in Manitoba are welcome.

Larry, son of Harry and Mary Horwitz.
was married June 26 to Sandra Ludwig,
a school teacher. The newlyweds left on
a motor trip to New York and Boston.

Two applications for a second television
station in Halifax were heard by the
board of governors. One application is by
Mitchell Franklin, partner in the Franklin
Herschorn Theatre Co. . . . Drive-In Theatres
in the maritimes situated near the
coast have had an overdose of fog the past
few weeks . . . Halifax theatres were happily
looking forward to the 5,000 USA sailors
and officers who were to spend a week in
the Port City . Whitbone, projectionist,
resigned after many years as a vicepresident
of the Canadian Labor Congress
in protest to the congress becoming
affiliated and identified with politics.
Gordon Lightstone jr., 20th-Fox manager,
won the city table tennis championship,
but lost the singles title in the finals
.. . Golding, manager at MGM,
and office manager-booker, Eric Patterson,
returned from New York where they
attended an eastern division conference
Cummings, owner and operator
of the Cummings Drive-In at Wakefield,
N. B.. passing out cigars on the birth of a
baby daughter.
Columbia Pictures Buys
Sam Levene's 'Fair Game'
HOLLYWOOD—Charles Feldman. head
of Famous Artists, has sold Sam Levene's
Broadway vehicle "Pair Game" to Columbia
Pictures and will make the picture
under his independent production company
banner.
United Artists just purchased the French
novel. "Le Dernier Des Justes" iThe Last
of the Justi. by Andre Schwartz-Bart, for
future production.
Airer's 5th Anniversary
MIDDLETOWN, CONN.—Sal Adorno jr.,
owner and general manager of the Middletown
Drive-In, marking the theatre's fifth
anniversary, ran a triple -feature program.
In addition, he provided free pony rides
and candy.
Story Editor Is Repacted
HOLLYWOOD — William J. Fadiman
has been signed to a new two-year deal as
executive story editor of Columbia Pictures.
Fadiman. who checked off the lot
early in March due to strikes, has been
with Columbia for eight years, three as a
producer. 1
