fAr. and Mrs. Herb Stevenson, who operate<br />

theatres at Prince George and at<br />

Revelstoke, stopped off on the way back<br />

home after a vacation cruise in the South<br />

Seas. Stevenson is building a drive-in at<br />

Revelstoke. which will make his lineup<br />

three theatres and two airers. Herb said<br />

patronage at Revelstoke was away off because<br />

of a drop in lumber operations.<br />

Ivan Ackery reported 2.400 attended an<br />

invitational screening of "PoUyanna" at<br />

the Orpheum ... In town from Toronto<br />

headquarters were Lloyd Pearson of General<br />

Sound & Theatre Equipment Co., and<br />

Equipment Co. has installed new sound and<br />

projection in the Li-An Drive-In at Valemount,<br />

which is operated by Messrs. Langford<br />

and Magee, newcomers to the business.<br />

Valemount is 35 miles from Jasper<br />

National Park . Steel of the Rio<br />

Theatre at Burns Lake in northern British<br />

Columbia has installed a 16mm Hortsonarc<br />

sound projector with an 80-amp. alternating<br />

current arc lamp.<br />

The Board of Broadcast Governors approved<br />

an application by CKPG to erect<br />

a television station at Prince George, using<br />

Howard Fletcher, operator<br />

channel 3 . . .<br />

of the Cedar V Theatre at Lynn Valley<br />

across the inlet from here, left on a trip<br />

in Europe. He recently gave up the lease<br />

on the suburban Kingcrest to S. Chizen.<br />

The Dreamland Theatre in Birch Hills,<br />

Sask., a 250-seater operated six days a<br />

week by Fred Lypchuk, was severely damaged<br />

by fire. The town's only theatre, it<br />

may not be rebuilt . . . Steve Capowski and<br />

wife have acquired the 16mm, 300-seat<br />

Toby, the only theatre in Invermere, from<br />

Mrs. Morgan and Morley Hogan.<br />

The §4,000,000 motion picture studio and<br />

recreation center planned by Oldi-ich<br />

Panorama Productions, Ltd., in West Vancouver<br />

is a step nearer. One of the three<br />

groups of ratepayers in the area who must<br />

approve the project voted favorably at a<br />

recent election.<br />

WINNIPEG<br />

Dollyanna" was screened at the Capitol<br />

for a selected audience of over 1,000,<br />

including provincial and civic leaders,<br />

school trustees and other educational officials,<br />

and radio and trade personnel. Manager<br />

Ed Newman had the theatre decorated<br />

with beautiful floral displays for the occasion.<br />

Doug Rosen spent six days here while<br />

on the way back to Toronto from a trip<br />

to Vancouver, Calgary and other western<br />

cities . . . Hatton Taylor was in town<br />

recently . . . Richard Miles announced the<br />

completion of plans for the new Airliner<br />

motor hotel with construction to commence<br />

early in July. This project, on Airport<br />

Drive-In theatre property, will not interfere<br />

with the drive-in operation.<br />

The 15th annual motion picture employes<br />

picnic will be held on July 17 at<br />

Rotary Lake in Selkirk Park. Races, games.<br />

pony rides and many treats for the kiddies<br />

will provide a day of fun and frolic for<br />

industry employes and their families. Sam<br />

Swartz reports that arrangements have<br />

been completed for 100 underprivileged<br />

children to share in the fun as guests of<br />

the industry. Free bus service to the picnic<br />

grounds will be provided from the Grand<br />

Theatre at 11 a.m. There will be a special<br />

award for the largest family present. All<br />

industry employes in Manitoba are welcome.<br />

Bob Hurwitz and Hye Schwartz head<br />

the arrangements committee.<br />

Larry, son of Harry and Mary Horwitz.<br />

was married June 26 to Sandra Ludwig,<br />

a school teacher. The newlyweds left on<br />

a motor trip to New York and Boston.<br />

Two applications for a second television<br />

station in Halifax were heard by the<br />

board of governors. One application is by<br />

Mitchell Franklin, partner in the Franklin<br />

Herschorn Theatre Co. . . . Drive-In Theatres<br />

in the maritimes situated near the<br />

coast have had an overdose of fog the past<br />

few weeks . . . Halifax theatres were happily<br />

looking forward to the 5,000 USA sailors<br />

and officers who were to spend a week in<br />

the Port City . Whitbone, projectionist,<br />

resigned after many years as a vicepresident<br />

of the Canadian Labor Congress<br />

in protest to the congress becoming<br />

affiliated and identified with politics.<br />

Gordon Lightstone jr., 20th-Fox manager,<br />

won the city table tennis championship,<br />

but lost the singles title in the finals<br />

.. . Golding, manager at MGM,<br />

and office manager-booker, Eric Patterson,<br />

returned from New York where they<br />

attended an eastern division conference<br />

Cummings, owner and operator<br />

of the Cummings Drive-In at Wakefield,<br />

N. B.. passing out cigars on the birth of a<br />

Columbia Pictures Buys<br />

Sam Levene's 'Fair Game'<br />

HOLLYWOOD—Charles Feldman. head<br />

of Famous Artists, has sold Sam Levene's<br />

Broadway vehicle "Pair Game" to Columbia<br />

Pictures and will make the picture<br />

under his independent production company<br />

banner.<br />

United Artists just purchased the French<br />

novel. "Le Dernier Des Justes" iThe Last<br />

of the Justi. by Andre Schwartz-Bart, for<br />

future production.<br />

Airer's 5th Anniversary<br />

MIDDLETOWN, CONN.—Sal Adorno jr.,<br />

owner and general manager of the Middletown<br />

Drive-In, marking the theatre's fifth<br />

anniversary, ran a triple -feature program.<br />

In addition, he provided free pony rides<br />

and candy.<br />

Story Editor Is Repacted<br />

HOLLYWOOD — William J. Fadiman<br />

has been signed to a new two-year deal as<br />

executive story editor of Columbia Pictures.<br />

Fadiman. who checked off the lot<br />

early in March due to strikes, has been<br />

with Columbia for eight years, three as a<br />

producer. 1<br />
