Bodm<strong>in</strong>, March 25th, 1851.<br />
The bearer, John Brown, has been <strong>in</strong> this town a few days, and lectured <strong>in</strong> the<br />
Union Hall to a large assemblage of persons, to whom he delivered a narrative<br />
of his life dur<strong>in</strong>g the time that he was a slave <strong>in</strong> the State of <strong>Georgia</strong>.<br />
I privately questioned him previous to this, as to the treatment received by<br />
slaves from their masters, the route he pursued at the time of his escape, c.; and<br />
hav<strong>in</strong>g resided <strong>in</strong> those parts for several years, I have a firm conviction <strong>in</strong> my<br />
own m<strong>in</strong>d as to the truth of his statements and the s<strong>in</strong>cerity of his objects.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g conversed with John Brown, a coloured man, now here, but who was<br />
formerly a slave <strong>in</strong> the United States, I have reason to be satisfied, from the<br />
accounts which he gives of persons and places that are known to me <strong>in</strong> that<br />
country, that he is not an impostor; and judg<strong>in</strong>g from his conduct while here, I<br />
am disposed to encourage him to spread the knowledge of the cruelties of<br />
<strong>Slave</strong>ry, and recommend him to the k<strong>in</strong>d notice of the public, trust<strong>in</strong>g that he<br />
will cont<strong>in</strong>ue to conduct himself well.<br />

The undersigned are desirous of recommend<strong>in</strong>g John Brown to the notice of<br />
philanthropists <strong>in</strong> other parts of England which he may visit.<br />

From an exam<strong>in</strong>ation of his testimonials, as well as from their own observation,<br />
they are fully satisfied of his veracity, and consider the object he has <strong>in</strong> view<br />
worthy of the support and encouragement of all friends of the Negro race.<br />
J. B. has addressed a crowded meet<strong>in</strong>g at the Guildhall, and his simple narrative<br />
of his suffer<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> his escape from <strong>Slave</strong>ry was listened to with great <strong>in</strong>terest<br />
and attention.<br />
