1. INTRODUCTION<br />
Detailed accounts of the chemical and pharmacological properties<br />
of mefloquine were presented at a recent meeting of the<br />
Scientific Working Group on the Chemotherapy of <strong>Malaria</strong> of the<br />
UNDP/<strong>World</strong> Bank/WHO Special Progrannne on Research and Training in<br />
Tropical Diseases. For the purpose of this annex the following<br />
aspects of mefloquine should be borne in mind;-<br />
action restricted to asexual blood stages (and developing<br />
gametocytes? )<br />
no action on mature gametocytes of Plasmodium falciparum<br />
no action on tissue schizonts of any species, nor on<br />
mosquito stages<br />
no action on secondary tissue stages of P.vivax and<br />
P.ovale (hypnozoites?)<br />
blood schizontocidal action present against all Plasmodium<br />
species
