Note
(1) Intended primarily for the South-East Asia and Western Pacific Regions and not necessarily applicable to other Regions.
(2) At present it is not possible to define a generally applicable criterion for discontinuation of the use of chloroquine in
clinical presumptive treatment. Research is urgently required.
For the time being this decision should be made by health authorities based on the best local information.
(3) For definitions, see WHO TRS No.529 (1973).
(4) In areas where treatment of clinical cases is the only measure of malaria control, it may be essential to retain chloroquine
in addition.
(5) If option A has to be used in areas with a significant proportion of species other than P.falciparum, chloroquine 600 mg
should also be used. ---- .-------
(6) Mefloquine by itself must not be used for mass drug administration.
