Preface<br />
The Special Programme is a goal-oriented research and training<br />
programme with two objectives:<br />
Research and development to obtain new and improved tools<br />
for the control of major tropical diseases, and<br />
Strengthening of the research capabi.lity of the tropical<br />
countries.<br />
The research is conducted on a global basis by multidisciplinary<br />
Scientific Working Groups; the tralnlng and institution<br />
strengthening activities are limited to the tropical countries<br />
where the diseases are endemic.<br />
The six diseases initially selected for attack are: malaria,<br />
schistosomiasis, filariasis (including onchocerciasis), trypanosomiasis,<br />
(both African sleeping sickness and the American form<br />
called Chagas' disease), leishmaniasis and leprosy. Scientific<br />
Working Groups are also active in trans-disease areas: Biomedical<br />
Sc iences, Vector Control, Epidemiology, and Soc ial and Economic<br />
Research.<br />
Scientists <strong>int</strong>erested in participating in the Special Programme<br />
are invited to write for further information.<br />
