Review of <strong>Drug</strong> Resistance in P. falciparum<br />
SOUTH-EAST ASIA REGION<br />
General<br />
The Regional Collaborative Studies on drug-resistant<br />
falciparum malaria in the WHO South-East Asia Region commenced in<br />
1978. The first review meeting was held in Chiengmai, Thailand,<br />
8-13 October 1979, and highlighted the achievements of the first<br />
year of operation. At this, the second review meeting, it was<br />
<strong>int</strong>ended to review the progress made over the period of two years<br />
since the first review meeting, to discuss problems that had<br />
hindered the progress, and to review work plans for the years<br />
1981-1983.<br />
Objectives of the South-East Asia Re~ional<br />
Collaborative Studies<br />
The object ives listed below are those that were defined at<br />
the Regional Workshop held in SEARO in August 1977 and endorsed by<br />
seven countries - Bangladesh, Burma, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Sri<br />
Lanka and Thailand - of the Region in 1978.<br />
(a) assessment of the status of susceptibility of P.falciparum<br />
to 4-aminoquinolines throughout the Region, by application--o-f the<br />
in vivo and/or in vitro techniques and establishment of a baseline<br />
for the currentge-ographical distribution, prevalence and degree<br />
of resistance;<br />
(b) monitoring of the spread, relative prevalence and degree<br />
of 4-aminoquinoline resistance in P.falicpa~ in the countries of
