9. How many schools of nursing did you have to inspect a& set up licensing
for?
I
A. Well, I think, as a matter of fact, there was a list af sorne accredited
schools when I cm, but there were so many little hospitqls that started
in a residence, a residence maybe smbody ' d willed for q hospital. Or a
doctor would want a place where he could operate himelf, just do as he
pleased, and he would start a little hospital. Ben the mrst thing you
know, they'd pop up trying to have students. Well, they *ntt pay students,
you see, and they got their fke service. They'd have a Wse who was mature
and able to direct the care of the patient, but she1 d be *e only teacher
in the theoretical part, also.
Som of them started a school of nursing. It was so necewary to have
standards for those graduating, who needed to becone regi$ered nurses, so
those standards were enlarged mrnthe little they had at orst. There
was one man; a 1eg;Lslator fhrn Chicago who fought [the hi standards].
That was the tire I had to go and talk about having the c extended to
three years, fmrntwo years, and having at least one

A. No, no, no. It got so it had to be that the nurse to be a hi&
school gaduate. You could put things up afterwards t their standards
built up to something that was really worth the effort.
Q. When you took over this job, what exactly were the st dards? Can you
remerrber? Was it one ye- of hi@ school?
